The Federal Government has disbursed ₦3.6 billion to back 200,000 tailors across Nigeria under the Industrial Training Fund’s (ITF) Skill Up Artisans (SUPA) Programme. The initiative marks a strategic shift from one-off equipment handouts to a comprehensive business incubation model aimed at building sustainable micro-enterprises and reducing the nation’s reliance on foreign skilled labour.
Government Shifts Strategy After Starter Pack Sales
Dr Afiz Ogun, Director-General of the Industrial Training Fund, announced the approval during the nationwide screening of applicants for the 2026 SUPA edition in Abuja. He explained that the programme had previously distributed starter packs to beneficiaries, but many sold the equipment instead of using it to launch businesses. This prompted a redesign toward long-term sustainability.
“The screening exercise is designed to ensure that only genuine artisans benefit from the initiative,” Dr Ogun stated. Applicants are assessed on documentation, practical skills, trade commitment, and readiness for advanced training. The programme, launched in 2024, aims to equip local professionals with modern technical and entrepreneurial competencies to cut dependence on foreign artisans.
New Model Focuses on Business Growth
Under the revised approach, beneficiaries receive industrial-grade sewing machines, specialised tailoring equipment, business signboards, mentorship, and technical support. The ITF has also established a digital marketplace to connect certified artisans directly with customers, expanding market access and ensuring steady work opportunities.
Post-training pathways include structured business incubation, job placements, and international employment where applicable. The ₦3.6 billion intervention represents one of the largest targeted investments in Nigeria’s tailoring sector, reinforcing the government’s commitment to empowering skilled workers and growing micro, small, and medium enterprises.
Complementary Employment Initiative Launched
In a related development, the Federal Government launched Phase III of the Renewed Hope Employment Initiative (RHEI), targeting 26,961 unemployed Nigerians. The programme will train participants in 70 high-demand skills across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with training scheduled to begin in August 2026.
Dr Mohammed Dingyadi, Minister of Labour and Employment, stated during the launch that the initiative is designed to equip unemployed Nigerians with practical, market-driven skills that lead to employment or self-reliance. The online registration portal is now open for prospective candidates.
Application and Screening Process
Interested tailors must participate in the ongoing screening organised by the ITF. Successful candidates will be selected for the 2026 SUPA Programme and benefit from the government-backed support. The screening evaluates documentation, practical skills, dedication to tailoring, and willingness to complete training.
With 200,000 artisans expected to benefit, the SUPA Programme underscores a broader federal strategy to strengthen vocational training, create jobs, and foster business growth.
