Federal Government Launches Ambitious Youth Employment Scheme

The federal government of Nigeria, through the Office of the Vice President, has officially launched a groundbreaking programme designed to empower the nation's youth population. This initiative, known as the Office of the Vice-President–Generation Unlimited (OVP-GenU) Secretariat, represents a significant step towards addressing the critical issue of youth unemployment in the country.

Connecting Millions to Opportunities

At the core of this programme is a bold target: to connect 20 million young Nigerians to learning and livelihood opportunities by the year 2030. This initiative forms part of a UNICEF-led Public-Private-Youth Partnership that aims to expand access to education, skills development, and job creation on an unprecedented scale.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held on Tuesday, Vice President Kashim Shettima emphasized the strategic importance of this new secretariat. Represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Hadejia, the Vice President explained that the platform would accelerate programme execution and strengthen collaboration across various government institutions.

Government Commitment and Strategic Alignment

The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, highlighted how this initiative aligns perfectly with the government's Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme (RHWDP). According to Bagudu, the programme is expected to support federal efforts to stimulate local economies across Nigeria's 8,809 electoral wards, creating a ripple effect of economic development throughout the nation.

From the education sector, the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad, expressed strong support for the initiative. She noted that the Federal Ministry of Education would adopt the GenU programme as a technical guide, particularly its proposed skills census which would inform planning for vocational and skills training across educational institutions.

International Partnership and Support

UNICEF has played a crucial role in this partnership, with the UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Wafaa Abdelatef, describing the hosting of the secretariat within the Vice-President's office as a clear sign of Nigeria's commitment to youth development. Abdelatef praised Nigeria for showing leadership in Africa by maximizing opportunities for job creation and pledged UNICEF's continued technical support for the programme's implementation.

Addressing Youth Unemployment

The Special Adviser to the President on Job Creation and MSMEs, Temitola Adekunle-Johnson, emphasized the programme's potential to address rising youth unemployment. He explained that the initiative would leverage existing government platforms, including the Shared Hubs initiative under the National MSME Clinics, to expand skills acquisition across various economic sectors.

The programme implementation will focus on several key areas:

  • Aligning skills development with community and industry needs
  • Ensuring accessibility through transparent processes
  • Strengthening collaboration between government institutions
  • Expanding vocational and technical training opportunities

This comprehensive approach aims to create sustainable pathways for Nigerian youth to gain meaningful employment and contribute to national economic growth. The establishment of the OVP-GenU Secretariat marks a significant commitment from the federal government to tackle one of Nigeria's most pressing challenges through strategic partnerships and targeted interventions.
