FirstBank of Nigeria Limited has launched its maiden SPARK a GEM Challenge, a strategic initiative designed to empower women entrepreneurs across the country. The programme, unveiled in Lagos, aims to provide financial support, mentorship, and capacity-building opportunities to female-owned businesses, reinforcing the bank's commitment to gender-inclusive economic growth.
What is the SPARK a GEM Challenge?
The SPARK a GEM Challenge is a competition where women entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas for a chance to win funding and receive comprehensive support. According to the bank, the initiative is part of its broader Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (CR&S) strategy, which focuses on education, health, and economic empowerment. The challenge specifically targets women-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which are often underserved in access to finance.
Speaking at the launch, the Divisional Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications at FirstBank, Mrs. Folake Ani-Mumuney, said: “We are committed to empowering women entrepreneurs who are the backbone of many communities. SPARK a GEM is our way of providing them with the tools, resources, and network they need to scale their businesses.” She added that the bank believes in the transformative power of women in driving economic development.
How the Challenge Works
The challenge is structured in phases, starting with an online application process where interested women entrepreneurs submit their business proposals. After a rigorous screening, shortlisted candidates will be invited to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges, including industry experts, successful entrepreneurs, and representatives from FirstBank. The final winners will receive a share of the N50 million prize fund, along with dedicated mentorship from seasoned professionals and access to a network of investors and business development services.
The programme also includes a series of capacity-building workshops covering topics such as financial management, digital marketing, and business strategy. These workshops are designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to sustain and grow their businesses beyond the challenge.
Impact on Women Entrepreneurs
This initiative comes at a critical time when women-owned businesses face significant barriers, including limited access to capital, markets, and networks. According to the International Finance Corporation (IFC), women-owned SMEs in Nigeria face a financing gap of over $9 billion. FirstBank’s SPARK a GEM Challenge directly addresses this gap by providing not only funding but also a supportive ecosystem.
One of the early applicants, Mrs. Adaeze Okafor, who runs a fashion design business in Lagos, expressed her excitement: “This challenge is a golden opportunity for women like me who have great ideas but lack the financial muscle to expand. I am hopeful that this will open doors for my business to reach new heights.”
FirstBank’s Commitment to Gender Inclusion
FirstBank has a long history of supporting women in business through various initiatives, including its FirstGem account, which offers tailored banking services to female customers. The SPARK a GEM Challenge is another milestone in the bank’s journey towards fostering gender equality in the financial sector. By empowering women entrepreneurs, the bank aims to create a ripple effect that will benefit families, communities, and the broader Nigerian economy.
As the challenge progresses, FirstBank plans to expand the programme to other regions and possibly increase the prize pool in subsequent editions. The bank encourages all eligible women entrepreneurs to apply and take advantage of this life-changing opportunity.
