KACCIMA Advocates for Private Sector Expertise in Kano Government Appointments
The Kano Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (KACCIMA) has issued a strong appeal to the Kano State Government, urging it to prioritize private sector dynamics when appointing commissioners and advisers in critical economic areas. This call was made during the opening of the 1st Quarter Council Meeting of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), held in Kano on Wednesday.
Emphasis on Private Sector Background for Economic Revival
Ambassador Usman Hassan Darma, President of KACCIMA, emphasized the significant role of the private sector in trade, investment, and economic development within the state. He argued that the government should consider the expertise of potential commissioners for commerce from the private sector before making appointments. Darma stressed that the choice of a commissioner responsible for trade and investment facilitation is a critical factor in Kano's economic revival.
"Such a position should not be left in the hands of a person who does not understand the market environment," Darma insisted. He explained that Kano requires a commissioner with a strong and active private sector background to effectively drive investment, industrialization, and job creation. This individual should be a technocrat with proven business experience, which would enhance policy coherence and ensure that government interventions reflect real sector dynamics.
Call for Institutionalized Cooperation and Fair Representation
Darma commended the Kano State Government for its ongoing engagement with the private sector but highlighted the need to institutionalize such cooperation, particularly in key economic ministries. He noted that a closer collaboration between the government and the business community would strengthen public-private partnerships and position Kano as a more competitive investment destination.
Additionally, KACCIMA sought the restoration and recognition of its chapter within NACCIMA, advocating for appropriate and commensurate representation in the association's organs and structures. Darma emphasized that KACCIMA should be fully included in council deliberations and committee memberships where key decisions are determined. "KACCIMA's requests are guided by the principles of fairness and institutional balance to collectively strengthen the association," he stated.
Government Response and Commitment
In response, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs Comrade Abdullahi Ibrahim Waiya, pledged the government's commitment to creating an enabling environment and supporting trade, commerce, and investment opportunities. This assurance aligns with KACCIMA's advocacy for a more dynamic and private sector-driven approach to economic governance in Kano State.
