Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has approved a ₦300 million financial package to support couples participating in the state's Hisbah Mass Wedding Scheme. Each bride will receive ₦200,000 paid directly into her bank account, intended to cover dowry costs and serve as start-up capital for the newlyweds.
The announcement was made by the Commander of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, on Thursday during a pre-marital orientation session for prospective couples at the Coronation Hall of the Government House in Kano.
How the Funds Will Be Distributed
Sheikh Daurawa explained that the ₦200,000 allocated to each bride would be transferred directly into her personal bank account once she opens one. This measure, he said, ensures that the funds reach the intended beneficiaries without any intermediaries, promoting transparency and accountability.
In addition to the cash grant, the state government will provide complete household furniture for the newly married couples. Each groom will also receive 10 yards of fabric, a traditional cap, a pair of shoes, and food items, all in line with the governor's directive.
Daurawa emphasized that the programme is designed to ease the financial burden often associated with marriage in the state, giving couples a stable starting point as they build their families. He said, "This initiative reflects the governor's commitment to supporting our youth and reducing the economic pressures that can strain marital life."
Grand Reception Planned for Saturday
The Hisbah commander also confirmed that the Kano State Government will host a large wedding reception for the couples on Saturday at the Government House. Prominent Islamic scholars from across Nigeria are expected to attend and offer prayers for the newlyweds, adding a spiritual dimension to the celebration.
Daurawa called on beneficiaries from earlier editions of the mass wedding programme to attend Saturday's event, saying their presence would motivate the incoming couples and reinforce the spirit of the initiative. He said, "Your success stories are a testament to the positive impact of this scheme, and your presence will inspire these new couples."
Advice to the Couples
During the orientation, Daurawa addressed the prospective couples directly, urging husbands to treat their wives with love, fairness, and a sense of responsibility. He advised brides to be patient and supportive as their new households take shape, and he stressed the value of settling disagreements through calm reconciliation rather than conflict.
The mass wedding scheme is part of the Kano State Government's broader social intervention programs, which have been praised for reducing the financial strain on families and promoting social stability. The ₦300 million allocation underscores the state's commitment to supporting young couples and fostering a culture of responsible marriage.
