Lafarge Africa Plc has successfully trained 100 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) through its Disability to Ability (D2A) Programme, held in Lagos. The initiative, themed “Ability Reimagined,” aims to address the barriers faced by over 25 million Nigerians living with disabilities, many of whom struggle with limited access to education, employment, and economic independence.
Collaborative Effort for Inclusion
The programme was delivered in partnership with chess icon Tunde Onakoya, the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, and the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA). This collaboration underscores a shared vision of creating a more inclusive society where ability is reimagined beyond physical limitations.
Practical Skills for Independence
Participants received hands-on training in laptop and phone repairs, make-up and gele styling, wig and braids making, and shoe and bag production. These practical skills were designed to equip beneficiaries with the tools needed to earn a living, grow professionally, and live independently. The training took place at hubs in Ikeja and Ikorodu, culminating in a graduation ceremony at the Sheba Centre, Maryland, Lagos.
The event was a moment of pride and possibility, as beneficiaries celebrated their achievements. Beyond acquiring technical skills, the programme restored confidence, sparked purpose, and reminded participants of their capabilities.
Commitment to Inclusive Growth
Lafarge Africa continues to prioritize inclusive growth, demonstrating that true inclusion means providing everyone with the tools and platform to thrive, regardless of physical ability. Mobolaji Ogunlende, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Lagos State, and Feyisayo Alayande, Executive Secretary of LSETF, highlighted the power of collaboration in making impact possible. They encouraged beneficiaries to use their skills to shape their futures and inspire others.
One beneficiary, Funmilayo Idowu, who trained in laptop and phone repairs, expressed her gratitude: “I thank Lafarge, LSETF, and LASODA for this opportunity to be independent and face the future with confidence.”
Through initiatives like the D2A Programme, Lafarge Africa proves that when opportunity is given, ability shines and lives are transformed for good.
