LASG Awards N900m Grants to 155 Researchers, Startups

Lagos State Government has announced that the Lagos State Science Research and Innovation Council has provided N900 million in grants to 80 researchers and 75 startups as part of efforts to boost research and innovation. The state's Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Tunbosun Alake, disclosed this during a media briefing marking the third year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's second term.

Grant Details and Applications

Alake stated that according to the 2026 grant cycle, the council processed over 240 applications. The grants aim to empower research and innovation across the state.

Lagos Identity Card Project

Alake also revealed that 6.46 million residents have been registered through the Lagos Identity Card Project. Among them, 4.058 million are adults and 2.407 million are children. He emphasized the importance of the project for governance, stating it provides an overall view of the administration's vision and improves efficiency in service delivery.

New University of Medicine and Health Sciences

Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, disclosed that the state government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has advanced legislation to establish a new University of Medicine and Health Sciences. This aims to address healthcare manpower deficits in Lagos and Nigeria by increasing training for doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals, countering the migration of medical practitioners abroad.

Clarification on School Library Renovations

Sule clarified that the Ministry of Tertiary Education did not renovate any public secondary school library, despite a budget performance document indicating over N300 million was spent in 2025 on such renovations. The document stated that 70 public secondary school libraries were rehabilitated for N232.6 million, and another N100 million was spent on completing 50 libraries under phases I and II. However, Sule maintained no renovations occurred.
