Tony Elumelu Foundation Announces $16 Million Initiative for 3,200 Young African Entrepreneurs in 2026
The Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) has unveiled an ambitious plan to disburse $16 million in 2026, targeting 3,200 young entrepreneurs across Africa. This significant initiative aims to foster job creation, reduce poverty, and drive inclusive economic growth throughout the continent.
Program Details and Implementation
During an online media session, TEF CEO Somachi Chris-Asoluka revealed that the program will be rolled out in four distinct groups throughout 2026, with the first cohort announcement expected soon. Each selected entrepreneur will receive a non-repayable $5,000 grant, complemented by comprehensive business training, personalized mentorship, professional coaching, and access to valuable networking opportunities.
The foundation has secured partnerships with several international organizations to enhance the program's reach and impact. Key collaborators include the IKEA Foundation, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), European Union, and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), among others. These strategic alliances demonstrate TEF's commitment to extending support to entrepreneurs in every African nation.
Entrepreneurs as Catalysts for African Progress
Chris-Asoluka emphasized the critical role entrepreneurs play in Africa's development trajectory, noting that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often outperform governments and large corporations in job creation. "We want to empower these entrepreneurs so they can generate revenues and drive innovations that will transform Africa from a continent known for poverty to one known for prosperity," she stated.
The CEO outlined TEF's threefold mission: creating sustainable employment opportunities, eradicating poverty, and ensuring inclusive economic empowerment that leaves no one behind. The program specifically prioritizes inclusion of women, youth, and persons with disabilities to promote fairness and combat inequality.
Proven Track Record and Digital Adaptation
Since its inception in 2015, TEF has demonstrated remarkable impact, having supported over 24,000 entrepreneurs with more than $100 million in funding. These businesses have collectively generated over $4.2 billion in revenue and created approximately 1.5 million direct and indirect jobs. The foundation's initiatives have positively affected more than 4.2 million households across Africa.
Recognizing the importance of technological advancement, TEF has incorporated artificial intelligence training into its curriculum. Chris-Asoluka stressed that African businesses must embrace digital tools to remain competitive in the global marketplace. She highlighted emerging opportunities in several sectors:
- Agriculture and agribusiness
- Technology and innovation
- Healthcare and medical services
- Education and skills development
- Retail and consumer markets
- Green economy and sustainable practices
Encouragement for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
The TEF CEO encouraged young Africans with viable business ideas to apply for the program, emphasizing persistence as key to success. She noted that many of the foundation's most successful participants were accepted after multiple application attempts, urging potential applicants not to be discouraged by initial rejections.
This 2026 initiative represents a continuation of TEF's decade-long commitment to transforming Africa's economic landscape through entrepreneurial empowerment, with the foundation serving as a catalyst for sustainable development and prosperity across the continent.
