Oba Akiolu Tells Investors: Prioritise Nigeria's Development, Not Just Profits
Oba Akiolu Urges Investors to Focus on Nigeria's Development

The Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Oba Rilwanu Babatunde Akiolu, has issued a clarion call to international investors, urging them to prioritise the genuine socio-economic development of Nigeria and its communities over the singular pursuit of profit.

A Royal Audience for Development

The monarch made this significant statement on Friday, 20 December 2025, while receiving a delegation from the international non-governmental organisation, 'Time for Africa Foundation'. The team, which included scientists from the prestigious University of Oxford and University of Cambridge, was led by Dr. Abby Olushola during the visit to his palace at Iga Iduganran on Lagos Island.

Oba Akiolu used the occasion to highlight a recurring pattern he has observed. He explained that multinational organisations often enter Nigeria with grand promises to the government and its people regarding development and community benefits. However, he noted that many subsequently shift their focus almost exclusively to maximising their financial returns, leaving their initial commitments unfulfilled.

The Call for Genuine Partnership

"Lagos and by extension Nigeria will always welcome genuine investors who are in the country to improve the socio-economic development of the people, not just those who are only after profit making," the revered traditional ruler declared.

He directly appealed to multinational corporations operating within the nation's borders. His message was clear: they must place a higher priority on improving the socio-economic conditions of their host communities and the country at large. This, he emphasised, should be held in greater regard than strategies designed solely for generating huge profits.

A Model in Non-Profit Initiative

The visiting team, led by Dr. Olushola, presented an example of the type of investment the Oba endorses. She clarified that the Time for Africa Foundation is not driven by profit motives. Instead, it concentrates its efforts on critical areas such as recycling projects, waste-to-wealth programmes, and advanced cancer research.

Dr. Olushola, identifying herself as a true Lagos Islander who returned home after studying abroad, stated her mission was to apply her wealth of international experience to foster tangible improvements in Lagos and Nigeria as a whole.

The significant meeting was attended by notable dignitaries, including Prince Kayode Akiolu, the lawmaker representing Lagos Island Federal Constituency 1, and Prince Taiwo Oyekan, the Chairman of Lagos Island Local Council.

The Oba's remarks underscore a growing sentiment for a more equitable and sustainable model of foreign investment in Nigeria, one where corporate success is intrinsically linked to the prosperity and development of the local populace.
