EF Motors Launches Electric Car Assembly in Nigeria, Rivaling Innoson
New Electric Car Assembly Plant Opens in Imo State

Nigeria's automotive sector is witnessing a significant transformation as EF Motors Limited announces the commencement of hybrid electric vehicle assembly operations in Imo State, creating fresh competition for indigenous manufacturer Innoson Motors.

New Electric Vehicle Assembly Plant in Imo State

EF Motors Limited, a subsidiary of EF Network Limited, has established its assembly facility on a substantial 30-hectare site in Imo State. The company has formed a strategic partnership with Chinese automotive firm Zhejiang Pukao New Energy Vehicle Co., Ltd. to bring electric vehicle technology to Nigerian roads.

During the initial operational phase, the plant aims to produce more than 40,000 hybrid electric vehicles annually, with ambitious plans to scale production to 100,000 units by 2028. This expansion timeline represents a significant commitment to the Nigerian automotive market.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

The electric vehicle initiative promises substantial employment opportunities for Nigerians. Company officials project the creation of 5,000 direct jobs alongside more than 20,000 indirect employment positions across various supporting industries and services.

EF Motors Chairman Gideon Egbuchulam announced these developments during the Lagos International Trade Fair at Tafawa Balewa Square. He emphasized that the company's mission focuses on providing Nigerians with affordable, energy-efficient transportation solutions while simultaneously reducing transportation costs and generating employment.

Vehicle Models and Consumer Benefits

The company introduced two primary vehicle models designed specifically for the Nigerian market. The Orca and Panda models combine electric and fuel-powered engines, offering Nigerian families and taxi operators a practical transportation solution with an impressive total range of up to 385 kilometres.

According to Egbuchulam, this hybrid technology enables users to achieve substantial fuel savings, potentially reducing daily transportation expenses by between N10,000 and N20,000 compared to conventional fuel-powered vehicles.

Chidi Success, EF Motors' Director of Business Development, highlighted that government incentives for local electric vehicle manufacturing, including tax waivers, will be directly passed on to consumers, making the vehicles more affordable for Nigerian buyers.

Charging Infrastructure and After-Sales Support

EF Motors has comprehensive plans to establish public charging stations nationwide, utilizing both solar energy and grid electricity. The company also commits to providing robust after-sales services, spare parts availability, and repair support networks across Nigeria to ensure customer satisfaction and vehicle maintenance.

The technology partnership ensures complete technology transfer and comprehensive training for local engineers, as emphasized by Shela Lin, Sales Manager at the technology partner supplying assembly expertise. This approach supports Nigeria's long-term objective of developing a sustainable automotive industry.

Intensifying Competition in Nigeria's EV Market

Industry analysts note that EF Motors' market entry significantly intensifies competition for Innoson Motors, which has dominated local vehicle production for decades. While Innoson Motors holds the distinction of being the first company to produce electric cars locally in Nigeria for commercial sale, other firms have engaged in assembly operations.

Nigeria's local assembly of electric vehicles began in 2021 with Hyundai's Kona, assembled by Stallion Motors. The evolving competitive landscape signals growing interest in Nigeria's electric vehicle market and increasing options for Nigerian consumers seeking alternative energy vehicles.

Meanwhile, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing continues its operations with a production capacity of 60,000 units per year, though the company currently operates at only 20% capacity due to market demand constraints. The company's cheapest vehicle model sells for N22 million, featuring full air-conditioning, rugged construction, and a four-year warranty.
