Ibom Deep Seaport MoU Signed with INTERAF Consortium

In a significant move to advance a long-awaited infrastructure project, the Akwa Ibom State Government has formalised a partnership with a private consortium for the development of the Ibom Deep Seaport. The landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the Government House in Uyo on 13 January 2026, marking a pivotal step towards the realisation of the port.

Governor's Unwavering Commitment to Economic Transformation

Governor Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, reaffirmed his administration's total dedication to delivering the Ibom Deep Seaport, describing it as a critical necessity for the people of the state. Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, the Governor emphasised the project's potential to boost the state's economy and transform the region.

He urged the Interaf Group Consortium to work closely with the state's investment vehicle, the Akwa Ibom Investment Corporation (AKICORP), to ensure timely execution. The Governor assured that his government is fully committed to putting all necessary requirements in place to get the project on course.

Governor Eno also commended the consortium for its interest and specifically acknowledged the efforts of former Petroleum Minister, Atuekong Don Etiebet, for being part of the team driving the project's actualisation.

A Milestone for a Vision First Conceived in 2007

In his remarks, Atuekong Don Etiebet praised Governor Umo Eno for his visionary and impactful leadership, which he said has remarkably transformed Akwa Ibom State. He noted that the signing of the MoU represents a significant milestone for the deep seaport project, an initiative first conceived back in 2007.

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Interaf Group Consortium, Engr. Ezinwa Chinedu Ibekwe, expressed gratitude to the state government for the confidence reposed in his company. He assured the government of the consortium's readiness to deliver on its mandate, promising a collaborative approach to ensure the project's success.

Framework for the Port and Industrial City

The core of the ceremony was the official signing of the MoU between the two parties. This document outlines the modalities and preliminary framework for collaboration concerning the development and future operations of the Ibom Deep Seaport and the associated Ibom Industrial City.

The event was attended by key government officials, including the State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Hon. Uko Udom, SAN, and the Managing Director of AKICORP, Pastor Imo-Abasi Jacob, alongside other senior government functionaries.

The signing of this MoU injects fresh momentum into the Ibom Deep Seaport project, positioning it as a future hub for maritime commerce and industrial activity in the Gulf of Guinea. The collaboration between the state and the private sector is seen as essential for unlocking the project's vast economic potential for Akwa Ibom and Nigeria at large.
