The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has inaugurated the Institute of Maritime Studies at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), marking a significant step toward enhancing expertise in Nigeria's maritime industry. The event underscores the federal government's commitment to knowledge-driven development as a catalyst for economic growth.
Strategic Importance of the Institute
Oyetola described the inauguration as a defining milestone in Nigeria's resolve to strengthen institutional capacity, advance innovation, and deepen human capital in the maritime and blue economy sectors. He emphasized that the facility, featuring well-equipped lecture rooms and administrative spaces, reflects the government's belief that the future of the blue economy depends on nurturing skilled minds.
"This state-of-the-art facility is a testament to the federal government's commitment to knowledge-driven development. It reflects our belief that the future of the blue economy will be shaped not just by natural endowments but also by the quality of minds we nurture within institutions such as this," Oyetola stated.
Vision for Sustainable Growth
The minister reiterated that the vision for Nigeria's marine and blue economy is anchored on sustainable exploitation of ocean resources, economic diversification, environmental stewardship, and inclusive growth. He called for collaborative efforts to harness the full potential of the sector.
Dayo Mobereola, Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), highlighted capacity building as a core pillar of the agency's mandate. He disclosed that NIMASA, through the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP), has trained 2,497 youths to bridge the talent gap in the maritime industry.
Facilities and Partnerships
The vice-chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, explained that the building represents the first phase of the Institute of Maritime Studies Complex, donated by NIMASA. She noted that the institute delivers quality experiential learning to students from maritime organizations and private shipping companies, in collaboration with industry experts.
"The facility represents a major investment in human capital development. It features modern lecture rooms, state-of-the-art laboratories, and other equipment to support practical training, research, and innovation. These facilities will significantly enhance direct learning and equip our faculty, students, and participants with the competencies required in today's dynamic global maritime industry," Ogunsola said.
The institute is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing Nigeria's maritime education and research, contributing to the nation's blue economy goals.
