NGX Loses N544.5bn as First Holdco, Fidelity Bank Lead Profit Taking

The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) witnessed a significant market downturn on Wednesday, as the market capitalization dropped by N544.5 billion. This decline was primarily driven by profit taking in major stocks, particularly First Holdco and Fidelity Bank, according to a report by Nairametrics.

Market Performance and Key Losers

The NGX All-Share Index (ASI) fell by 0.93% to close at 98,456.78 points, down from the previous day's 99,382.45 points. Consequently, the market capitalization decreased to N55.73 trillion from N56.27 trillion, representing a loss of N544.5 billion in a single trading session.

Leading the decline were First Holdco, whose share price dropped by 10% to close at N28.35, and Fidelity Bank, which also shed 10% to close at N11.25. Other notable losers included Wema Bank, which fell by 9.94% to N7.79, and FBN Holdings, which declined by 9.93% to N25.85.

Investor Sentiment and Trading Activity

The market breadth closed negative, with 32 stocks recording losses against 15 gainers. This indicates a bearish sentiment among investors, as they opted to take profits following recent rallies. According to market analysts, the profit taking is a natural correction after a period of sustained gains, with investors rebalancing their portfolios.

Trading activity was mixed, with the total volume of shares traded increasing by 12% to 1.2 billion units, while the total value of trades rose by 8% to N13.4 billion. The number of deals also went up to 9,876 from 8,432, reflecting increased participation in the market.

Sectoral Performance and Outlook

All major sectoral indices closed in the red, with the banking index leading the decline by 2.5%, followed by the consumer goods index which fell by 1.3%. The oil and gas index also dipped by 0.8%, while the industrial goods index was down by 0.6%.

Despite the downturn, some stocks managed to record gains, with Honeywell Flour emerging as the top gainer, appreciating by 9.94% to close at N4.20. Other gainers included UACN, which rose by 8.33% to N26.00, and International Breweries, which gained 7.69% to close at N4.20.

Market analysts believe that the current profit taking is temporary and expect the market to stabilize in the coming sessions as investors digest corporate earnings and economic data. However, they also caution that continued sell-offs could lead to further declines if external factors such as global oil prices and geopolitical tensions remain unfavorable.

The NGX's performance on Wednesday reflects a broader trend of volatility in the Nigerian capital market, as investors navigate between profit taking and bargain hunting. The market's resilience will be tested in the near term, with many eyes on the upcoming monetary policy decision by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
