The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has declared that the success of Nigeria's ongoing tax reforms will depend heavily on developing a more efficient, ethical, and professionally-grounded tax workforce. The reforms are scheduled to take full effect in January 2026.

Professional Excellence Crucial for Reform Success

President and Chairman of Council, CITN, Innocent Ohagwa, made this declaration during this year's fellowship conferment ceremony where approximately 685 professionals were elevated to the rank of fellow. Ohagwa emphasized that being elevated to fellowship status carries significant responsibility to uphold the highest ideals of the taxation profession.

According to Ohagwa, the ongoing tax reform represents one of the most robust and decisive shifts toward a more efficient, streamlined, and technologically-driven tax administration system in Nigeria's history. He stressed that CITN tax professionals remain central to effectively translating these commendable policy and legal frameworks into practical action.

Call for Continuous Professional Development

Addressing the new fellows as senior ambassadors of the profession, the CITN boss urged them to lead the transformation by remaining relevant through increased investment in knowledge and staying current with recent developments in taxation and finance.

The Special Guest and Managing Partner of TAC Professional Services, Tunde Adaramaja, reinforced this message by urging the new fellows to remain steadfast in upholding the institute's core values and principles. He specifically highlighted the importance of integrity, professionalism, accountability, and service in their practice.

Adaramaja equally encouraged the newly inducted fellows to continue investing in their professional growth to contribute actively to both the institute's development and Nigeria's economic progress at large.

Preparing for January Implementation

With the tax reforms set to become fully operational in January, the institute is positioning its members as critical drivers of this fiscal transformation. The emphasis on technical competence, ethical standards, and professional excellence underscores the crucial role tax professionals will play in Nigeria's evolving economic landscape.

The fellowship conferment ceremony served as both a recognition of achievement and a call to action for tax professionals to support the government's efforts in building a more efficient and technologically advanced tax administration system.
