Abuja witnessed an intellectual revolution on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, as the National Essay Competition culminated with young Nigerians demanding comprehensive reforms in taxation and governance. The event, themed "Write the Future," transformed into a powerful platform where emerging thinkers challenged conventional narratives and proposed innovative solutions for national development.
Celebrating Intellectual Excellence Over Entertainment
Convened by Foluso Sylvanus Ojo, publisher of Abuja City Journal, and sponsored by the Federal Inland Revenue Service, the competition deliberately shifted focus from entertainment to academic achievement. Ojo expressed frustration that entertainers often receive millions while academic excellence gets minimal recognition. "We want young people to be recognized for their ideas and their contribution to nation building," Ojo emphasized, describing the event as a necessary correction to national priorities.
Medical Student Becomes Policy Advocate
The competition produced remarkable winners whose essays demonstrated deep understanding of fiscal policy. Vincent Maduka claimed the top prize, while Loveson Anselm and Ogunleye Ayomide finished as first and second runners-up respectively. For Anselm, a University of Jos medical student who participated during professional exams, the experience became transformative. "What I discovered is that the intention behind the reforms is real and if it is carried through it can improve Nigeria's fiscal strength," he revealed, noting how the competition dispelled misconceptions about taxation.
The FIRS used the platform to engage the next generation, with Chief Economic Advisor Mohamed Adaya Salisu emphasizing that "investing in young people is the foundation for long-term growth." Engineer Michael Oluwagbemi reinforced this message, describing Nigeria as a nation with huge challenges but even greater potential, especially given its youthful population.
As the event concluded, participants were urged to maintain their curiosity and continue contributing to national discourse. The clear consensus emerged: education remains Nigeria's most powerful tool for transformation, and these young thinkers are ready to write the country's future through informed policy engagement.
