NLC Urges Total Rejection of 'Distorted' Tax Law, Calls for Unity
NLC Calls for Rejection of Distorted Tax Law

The Nigeria Labour Congress has issued a strong call to action, urging all citizens to completely reject any tax legislation that has been distorted or falsified. The labour centre emphasized that fiscal policies must be created with inclusivity and fairness at their core to serve the Nigerian people effectively.

A Call for Collective Action and Fair Legislation

In a powerful statement released by NLC President, Joe Ajaero, titled "Our hope lies in collective action", the congress stressed that laws impacting workers and citizens must be meticulously developed. Ajaero warned against rushing legislation that contains serious errors or is tainted by political manipulation, which ultimately harms the majority of the population.

The statement argued that it is far better to patiently craft a law through broad co-creation and ownership than to enact a flawed one. The NLC president laid out a clear vision for the nation, insisting on social and tax justice where every citizen has access to dignity, quality healthcare, education, and security.

The Pillars of the NLC's Demand

Ajaero's declaration centered on three fundamental demands for Nigeria. First, a just society where all citizens can live with dignity. Second, greater equity for workers where labour is justly rewarded and rights are fully respected. Third, a safe and secure nation where lives and property are guaranteed, allowing people to conduct their business without fear or intimidation.

The NLC leader emphasized that the true power of workers resides in their unity and collective action. He called on Nigerians to stand together in resisting policies that inflict suffering and exploit the population. Ajaero specifically warned against allowing divisions based on tribe, religion, or region to weaken their resolve.

Christmas Message: Hope and Mobilization

In a segment addressing the 2025 Christmas and festive season, the NLC extended warm greetings of peace, joy, and rejuvenation to Nigerian workers and the masses. The message acknowledged the profound challenges faced by millions, citing economic hardship and oppressive policies.

However, it framed the season's message of hope as a direct parallel to the national struggle. The statement noted that no matter how dark the night seems, a flicker of light always remains. The NLC urged workers to become that light consciously, without fear.

The congress reminded citizens that hope for revival is not passive but built on the concrete foundation of collective power and the action it can generate. It called on workers, farmers, traders, teachers, nurses, and all builders of the nation to unite, organize, and deploy their numbers as a force for rescue and national redemption.

Concluding with a rallying cry, the NLC encouraged workers to begin mobilizing from their local communities to forge a mighty, indivisible people's movement. The goal is to build a truly egalitarian nation that caters for the majority, not a privileged few, capable of shaping the country's future.
