NRS Launches Tax Helpline: Call 02094602700 for New Law Issues
NRS Publishes Phone Number for Tax Issues Reporting

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has taken a significant step towards public engagement by publishing a dedicated contact channel for citizens grappling with the newly implemented tax legislation. This move aims to facilitate reporting and enquiries concerning the Nigeria Tax Act (NTA) and Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA), which became effective on January 1, 2026.

Direct Line for Taxpayer Support

In an official announcement made on Monday via its X (formerly Twitter) account, the NRS provided citizens with a direct means of communication. Nigerians experiencing challenges or requiring clarification on any aspect of the new laws can now reach out through the published contact details.

The agency has stated its readiness to assist with a range of issues, including those related to Tax Identification Number (TIN) retrieval, exemptions, allowable deductions, tax reliefs, and general compliance. The designated phone number is 02094602700, and enquiries can also be sent via email to helpdesk@nrs.gov.ng.

Controversial Launch of New Tax Regime

The introduction of the new tax framework has been met with considerable scrutiny and calls for review from various sectors. Key stakeholders, including the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have jointly criticized the laws, labeling them as regressive and unfair to workers. The Organised Labour has urged the federal government to suspend implementation to allow for broader consultations.

Similarly, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has advocated for a pause, citing concerns over alleged last-minute alterations to the gazetted versions of the laws. Adding to the technical critique, the global audit firm KPMG conducted a review highlighting several "errors, gaps and omissions" that could hinder smooth implementation. While not explicitly demanding suspension, KPMG recommended further government review for necessary improvements.

Despite these appeals, the government has maintained its position, refusing to suspend the laws while promising future amendments to address identified shortcomings.

Key Features of the 2026 Tax Laws

The new tax regime is designed with dual objectives: to widen the tax base for increased government revenue and to simplify compliance procedures for individuals and businesses. It is built upon foundational acts that were established earlier.

The Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria Act and the Nigeria Revenue Service Act took effect from June 26, 2025, setting the institutional stage. The operational tax laws, the NTA and NTAA, followed on January 1, 2026.

Notable provisions include significant relief for low-income earners. Individuals earning up to the National Minimum Wage or an annual income of N800,000 are exempt from Personal Income Tax (PIT). Furthermore, the law prescribes an additional exemption for any amount that raises a low-income earner's annual total to N1,200,000.

The laws also safeguard long-term savings and benefits, explicitly exempting pension fund contributions, gratuities, retirement benefits, housing and health insurance contributions from taxation, as outlined in Section 163 of the NTA.

In a related development to streamline tax administration, the Joint Tax Board launched a unified online portal on January 1, 2026. This portal allows Nigerians to retrieve their Tax Identification Number by linking it with their National Identification Number (NIN) or Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) details, aiming to eliminate previous bureaucratic bottlenecks.

The establishment of the NRS helpline is seen as a complementary measure to this digital push, offering direct human support to navigate the complexities of the new fiscal landscape.
