MTN Nigeria Commits $1 Billion to Drive Broadband Expansion Beyond 70%
MTN Nigeria has announced a significant milestone, with its investment in the country's telecommunications sector reaching $1 billion in 2025. The company is now intensifying efforts to achieve broadband penetration levels exceeding 70%, leveraging hybrid connectivity solutions to enhance access across diverse communities, including rural regions.
Financial Performance and Infrastructure Growth
Chief Financial Officer Modupe Kadri revealed these details during a recent television interview, where he discussed MTN's performance in the last financial year and its outlook for the sector. Kadri highlighted that MTN achieved robust results, standing out among its peers, with a 22.9% increase in inflows to 392.2 million. The third quarter of 2025 saw a surge in inflows, contributing to total industry investment surpassing the $1 billion mark.
As part of its aggressive infrastructure expansion, MTN deployed more than 2,850 new network sites nationwide in 2025. This move is aimed at strengthening network coverage and capacity, particularly in underserved areas.
Challenges and Strategic Investments
Addressing concerns about whether increased revenue would translate into improved service quality, Kadri emphasized the capital-intensive nature of the telecommunications industry. He noted that even with available capital, enhancements in network infrastructure require time to materialize fully. In 2025, MTN spent approximately N1 trillion, a substantial increase from 2024 levels, but Kadri cautioned that the full impact of these investments will be gradual.
"We are not out of the woods yet, but we will continue now that we have a business case to make this investment," Kadri stated. He added that MTN is funding much of its expansion through operational cash flow, supported by ongoing private investment to fuel growth and infrastructure development.
Broadband Penetration Goals and Rural Connectivity
Kadri underscored the growing need to expand connectivity as Nigeria's population increases, pointing out that areas previously classified as rural require improved coverage. To bridge this gap, MTN is accelerating investment in these regions through initiatives like the Bridge Project and what he termed a "satellite revolution" aimed at closing the rural connectivity divide.
"The company is also targeting broadband penetration levels above 70 per cent, with a focus on hybrid connectivity solutions to improve access across communities," he affirmed.
Current Market Landscape and Future Outlook
According to checks by The Guardian, Nigeria's broadband penetration reached a record 53% in January 2026, driven by infrastructure expansion from operators such as MTN and Airtel. This represented strong growth from approximately 45% in early 2025, though it fell short of the 70% target set for the end of 2025. The sector continues to face challenges, including infrastructure deficits and high operational costs.
As of January 2026, there were roughly 182 million active mobile subscriptions in Nigeria. 4G technology dominates with a 53.4% penetration rate, while 5G networks are expanding, connecting 7.2 million users, which accounts for 3.94% of the user base. MTN's ongoing investments and strategic initiatives position it to play a pivotal role in advancing Nigeria's digital landscape and meeting future connectivity demands.
