Nigeria Becoming Africa’s Largest Fintech Hub, Says VC

Nigeria is rapidly emerging as Africa's largest and most dynamic fintech hub, according to Professor Olu Akinkugbe, Vice Chancellor of James Hope University (JHU) and a Professor of Economics. He made this statement during a visit by members of the National University Commission (NUC) to the institution's Lagos campus.

Nigeria currently holds the highest volume of venture capital funding on the continent and boasts a thriving ecosystem of over 430 startups. The fintech sector is valued at over $10.6 billion, with its epicenter in Lagos, the country's commercial capital.

Professor Akinkugbe highlighted that Nigeria is leading in innovations in payments, lending, and blockchain, thereby transforming the economy. He also revealed that JHU's Fintech programme is strategically designed to produce graduates who can understand financial systems and harness big data, machine learning, and predictive analytics to drive inclusion, efficiency, and security in financial services.

He noted that the institution is in advanced talks with Nigeria's fintech ecosystem and is also engaging with the University of Texas in Dallas, as well as two other universities in Canada and East Asia, to collaborate on technological solutions that will contribute to digital innovation across Africa.

Professor Akinkugbe praised the NUC as a vital regulatory body for nearly 310 universities in Nigeria, playing an indispensable role in maintaining standards, ensuring relevance, and fostering global competitiveness. He told the guests: "Your consistent engagement with tertiary institutions strengthens our sector and guarantees that the degrees we award remain symbols of genuine scholarship and integrity. For this noble mandate, we express our profound respect and gratitude."
