Egypt has rolled out an electronic visa on arrival system to streamline entry for international tourists, replacing the traditional paper visa sticker with a QR code. The new system took effect on August 1, 2026, and is part of the country's broader digital transformation strategy aimed at boosting its tourism sector.
Eligible Nationalities and Requirements
The electronic visa on arrival is available to citizens of countries already eligible for Egypt's visa on arrival programme, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and European Union member states. Additionally, foreign nationals holding a valid Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) residency permit for at least six months remain eligible.
How to Apply for the E-Visa
Travellers can obtain the electronic visa through three convenient channels:
- Download the official Visa On Arrival mobile application, select their destination airport, provide travel details, and pay the required fee.
- Use self-service kiosks located at Cairo International Airport.
- Access the official online portal at Visaonarrival.gov.eg.
Applicants must provide their passport details, nationality, arrival date, airport of entry, and email address. Once payment is completed, a QR code is sent via email, allowing travellers to proceed directly to immigration upon arrival.
Key Details and Validity
The QR code remains valid for seven days from the date of issue. Travellers can request it before departure, during their journey, or immediately after arriving at Cairo International Airport. The electronic visa is valid for a single entry and permits a stay of up to 30 days in Egypt. Officials have clarified that the scheme is strictly for tourism purposes and cannot be used for business travel.
Transition and Expansion
During the transition period, the electronic system will operate alongside the existing paper visa process. The digital service is expected to be expanded to other airports and border entry points across Egypt in the near future, as reported by Khaleej Times.
This initiative aligns with Egypt's goal of enhancing the travel experience for millions of visitors annually.
