The Lagos State Government has announced that it expects no fewer than 40,000 tourists and participants to attend the 2026 Lagos Fanti Carnival, with firm assurances of comprehensive security and safety measures in place for the event. Scheduled for April 6, 2026, at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos, the carnival is poised to be a major cultural spectacle, drawing both local residents and international visitors.

Commitment to Security and Cultural Celebration

During a media briefing in Lagos, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the state's Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, emphasized that the Fanti Carnival stands as one of Lagos's most iconic cultural celebrations. She highlighted that the event reflects the state's rich cultural diversity, specifically celebrating the heritage of Afro-Brazilian returnees and strengthening cultural ties between Nigeria and the global community.

Benson-Awoyinka stated, "Lagos stands as a vibrant melting pot of cultures, histories, and traditions. The Fanti carnival is a compelling reflection of this diversity, celebrating the rich heritage of the Afro-Brazilian returnees and the enduring cultural ties between Lagos and the wider Atlantic world."

She further described the carnival as more than just a festival, calling it a living narrative that expresses identity, resilience, and community through colourful costumes, rhythmic music, captivating dances, and theatrical displays. This, she noted, brings history to life while connecting generations through shared cultural experiences.

Economic and Cultural Impact

The commissioner underscored the state government's commitment to leveraging cultural tourism as a driver of economic growth and global visibility. She pointed out that events like the Fanti Carnival stimulate local businesses and empower creative industries, contributing significantly to the local economy. Additionally, the government is focused on preserving cultural authenticity while adapting the carnival to appeal to younger generations, ensuring its relevance and sustainability.

Benson-Awoyinka commended sponsors, partners, and stakeholders for their continued support, describing their contributions as vital to the growth of Lagos's cultural ecosystem. She reiterated the government's dedication to safety, confirming that all necessary measures will be implemented to guarantee a secure and seamless experience for all attendees.

Historical Significance and Community Involvement

Tola Akerele, General Manager of the National Theatre, noted that the carnival commemorates Nigerian returnees from Brazil over a century ago, emphasizing its importance in promoting tourism not only in Lagos State but across Nigeria as a whole. Tolani Animashaun, Project Director of the Lagos Fanti Carnival, explained that seven communities from the returnee groups will participate in the one-day event, showcasing their cultural heritage.

Animashaun confirmed that at least 40,000 people are expected to participate and praised partners for sustaining the carnival. She promised utmost safety and security throughout the event, stressing that the government has provided all necessary facilities to ensure a smooth experience.

A member of the organising committee, A Duke Gomez, added that the carnival will serve as an exploration of the backend stories of returnees from Brazil, adding depth to the cultural narrative. Remi Dacosta, General Secretary of the Brazil Descendant Association, explained that all seven communities will be involved, with the event receiving tremendous support from the Lagos State government over the years. He declared that the carnival will serve as a platform for descendants to showcase their diverse Brazilian heritage in Nigeria.
