The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a significant weather advisory, forecasting a mix of dust haze and thunderstorms across the country for a three-day period starting Monday, 8 December 2025.
Regional Breakdown of Weather Conditions
According to the outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, the northern region will experience the most severe conditions. Moderate dust haze with visibility between 2 to 5 kilometers is expected on Monday in states including Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, and Yobe. Other parts of the north will see slight dust haze.
The central states are not spared, with slight dust haze anticipated over the region throughout the entire forecast period from Monday to Wednesday.
Southern States to Experience Thunderstorms
The weather pattern shifts for the southern region. NiMet predicts a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine. However, residents should prepare for isolated thunderstorms. In the morning hours of Monday, parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom states have a chance of thunderstorms.
The agency further states that later in the day, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rains are likely over a wider area. This includes parts of Rivers, Delta, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Ogun, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
Extended Forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday
The disruptive weather is set to continue into Tuesday. The northern region will again grapple with moderate dust haze and reduced visibility of 2-5km. The central belt will persist under a blanket of slight dust haze.
In the south, the cloudy skies will remain, but the threat of thunderstorms will shift. Prospects for isolated thunderstorms later on Tuesday are focused over parts of Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
While the detailed outlook for Wednesday was implied in the three-day forecast period, the conditions are expected to follow a similar pattern, emphasizing the need for continued public awareness.
This comprehensive forecast from NiMet is crucial for residents, travelers, and various sectors to plan their activities, manage health concerns related to dust inhalation, and prepare for potential disruptions from thunderstorms. Motorists, especially in the north, are advised to exercise caution due to significantly reduced visibility.
