The highest decision-making body for the Tiv people in Taraba State, known as Ijir Tamen, has issued a strong warning against the growing practice of early marriage among young girls in the community. The group labeled the trend a serious danger to the future progress and development of the Tiv nation.
Communiqué from Bali Meeting Highlights Key Concerns
The alarm was raised in a formal communiqué released after the body's 5th expanded stakeholders' meeting, which took place over the past weekend in Bali Local Government Council. The gathering, held on 1 December 2025, included traditional rulers, religious leaders, political officeholders, and representatives from youth and women's groups.
In its statement, Ijir Tamen made a direct appeal to parents, urging them to prioritize the education of their girl-child instead of forcing them into premature marriages. The leaders argued that educating girls is fundamental for the community's long-term growth and stability.
Security, Displacement, and Political Engagement
The communiqué also addressed pressing security issues. The group commended Governor Agbu Kefas for his decisive actions in response to recent attacks by herdsmen on Tiv communities in Chanchanji Ward of Takum Local Government Area. It stated that the governor's swift intervention has helped restore a sense of safety among affected residents.
However, the leaders called for sustained efforts to achieve lasting peace. They appealed to the governor to prioritize support for displaced Tiv persons, particularly those from Wukari LGA who are still unable to return to their homes. To resolve lingering conflicts, the body recommended forming a joint negotiation committee with credible representatives from both Tiv and Jukun communities.
Expressing concern over low political participation among Tiv people in rural areas, Ijir Tamen announced a resolution to establish a political education committee. This committee will aim to mobilize grassroots engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Economic Diversification and Community Vigilance
Recognizing the community's heavy dependence on farming, the leaders advised Tiv residents to diversify their income sources and adopt modern agricultural techniques to boost productivity and economic resilience.
Amid nationwide security challenges, the communiqué, signed by Chief Dr. David Akever Gbaa Tela (Gumbegha U Tiv Taraba I and Ter Tiv Bali II) and General Secretary Zaki Targema Ukange, encouraged community members to remain vigilant. It urged them to cooperate with security agencies by promptly sharing useful information to help maintain safety.
