First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has declared that she will wear a wrapper and buba made from Akwete fabric if her husband, President Bola Tinubu, secures a second term in the 2027 presidential election. She made the announcement during her visit to the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Village in Abia State on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, where she also unveiled a N2 billion donation aimed at revitalising the local weaving industry.
Akwete Fabric: A Symbol of Culture and Heritage
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Tinubu expressed her admiration for the Akwete fabric, describing it as a sacred craft passed down through generations. “If God brings my husband in a second time, I’ll be wearing a buba and wrapper made from Akwete. I am going to be wearing that because it is very soft breathable cotton,” she said. She emphasised the importance of traditional attire in preserving Nigerian identity: “I am in awe of all the richness of what the Akwete fabrics stand for. I love traditional outfits because our tradition, our culture, tells us who we are. The moment we lose that, we won’t remember where we come from.”
N2 Billion Donation to Boost Weaving Industry
The First Lady announced a N2 billion donation to support the Akwete weaving cooperative, aiming to revive and sustain the industry. She noted that the craft requires love, patience, and endurance, and encouraged women to pass it on to the next generation. “The tradition of the Akwete handmade fabric is dear to the hearts of the women who make it, and they should be encouraged to pass it on to the next generation,” she added.

The donation is expected to provide modern equipment, training, and market access for weavers in Abia State, potentially boosting local employment and preserving a centuries-old tradition.
