Catholic Church Calls for Women to Reassess Responsibilities Amid Societal Challenges
The Maria Assumpta Catholic Chaplaincy at the Nigerian Air Force Base in Shasha, Lagos State, has voiced deep concern over the escalating moral decadence in society. Church leaders attribute this troubling trend to a significant decline in proper parental responsibility, a cornerstone that was more robustly upheld in previous generations.
Warning on Social Media and Secularism
Speaking at a football competition organized to commemorate Catholic Mother’s Day, Rev. Fr. (Dr) Ignatius Okoligwe, Principal of Vita Christi Catholic College in Idimu, highlighted critical issues. He pointed out that many women have neglected their pivotal role in shaping society by allowing social media and secularism to consume time that should be dedicated to family life. Okoligwe issued a stark warning, stating that unless there is a concerted return to more traditional parenting roles, the situation is likely to deteriorate further in the coming years.
He elaborated, "In the past, women served as role models. However, due to secularism, the pervasive influence of social media, and numerous other distractions, many mothers now face challenges that make it exceedingly difficult to care for their families morally. My advice to women is that each one should go back to the drawing board and rediscover the essential roles they must play."
Emphasis on Core Values and Moral Guidance
Okoligwe urged women to act as the moral compass for their children, cautioning them to be vigilant about any actions that could negatively influence young minds. He stressed the importance of reassessing responsibilities and returning to core values such as modesty, discipline, and prudence. According to him, restoring these values is crucial for raising responsible children and building a better, more cohesive society.
"Women should pay closer attention to the type of clothes they wear and the music they listen to," he stated. "Every action taken in front of their children requires careful consideration. Unlike in the past, when women behaved modestly around their children, some now show less regard, contributing to the societal problems we all face."
Celebrating Mother’s Day and Women’s Contributions
Okoligwe described Mother’s Day as a special occasion dedicated to honoring women and recognizing their invaluable contributions to the family, church, and society. He noted that the Catholic celebration draws inspiration from Mother Mary, who is revered as a model of virtue for women worldwide.
Balancing Spirituality with Practical Action
Dr. (Mrs) Irene George, President of the Catholic Women at Maria Assumpta, addressed contemporary challenges facing women. She emphasized that one key issue is the failure to balance spirituality with practical action. "Not every problem demands prayer all the time. Some situations require us to take decisive actions. As Christians, we must always discern the right thing to do at the appropriate moment," she stressed.
George characterized this year’s Mother’s Day celebration as a blend of innovation, unity, and spiritual growth, aimed at strengthening families and promoting positive societal values. She highlighted that the football match, part of the celebration’s activities, was designed to encourage fitness, reduce stress, and foster bonding among women. This inclusion of sporting activities reflects a shift from traditional celebrations to more engaging and health-conscious initiatives.
Recognition of Women’s Efforts
In his remarks, Rev. Fr. Kingsley Agbo, Priest in charge of Maria Assumpta Chaplaincy, underscored that the celebration served as an avenue for the church to acknowledge the efforts and roles women play in shaping and influencing positive behavior in society. He reiterated the church’s commitment to supporting women in their vital contributions to community well-being.
