In a significant spiritual event aimed at ushering in prosperity, the revered Benin Monarch, His Royal Majesty, Omo N'Oba N'Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, has performed a crucial traditional ceremony. The ritual, known as the Ewere rite, was conducted on Wednesday, December 25, 2025, with prayers focused on seeking breakthroughs and divine guidance for the people of Edo State and Nigerians nationwide.
Purpose and Significance of the Ceremony
According to a statement from the palace's Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Osaigbovo Iguobaro, the primary objective of the ancient rite was twofold. It served as an expression of gratitude to the Almighty God for the accomplishments and milestones achieved throughout the outgoing year. Simultaneously, it was a profound supplication for blessings and a glorious start to the impending new year. The Oba directed his prayers to the Creator of the universe and his royal ancestors, seeking their continuous intervention and wisdom for his people.
A Spectacle of Spirituality and Culture
The ceremony was a vibrant display of Benin's rich cultural heritage. Reports indicate that the atmosphere was charged with spirituality as chants, prayers, and eulogies kindled spiritual banners, captivating the audience. The event drew a diverse crowd, including dignitaries, various groups, and individuals, all of whom witnessed the sacred proceedings with delight.
A key moment of the festival was when subjects paid homage to the Monarch and presented him with the sacred Ewere leaves, a symbol of peace, blessing, and goodwill. In a reciprocal gesture of grace and solidarity, Oba Ewuare II extended similar honours to the dignitaries present at this annual gathering.
Continuation of the Festival Schedule
The palace has confirmed that the festivities are far from over. The cultural calendar continues on Friday, December 26, with a highly anticipated event: the re-enacted second edition of the traditional wrestling competition, which will be held within the grounds of the Oba's Palace.
Furthermore, the spiritual observances will culminate on Saturday, December 28, when the Oba will lead a special Igue Thanksgiving service. This significant service is scheduled to take place at the Holy Aruosa Cathedral Church in Benin City, blending traditional reverence with Christian worship in a unique aspect of Benin's religious practice.
