2026: Alaafin, Olubadan, Bishop Unite in Calls for Life, Peace, Unity
Monarchs, Bishop Preach Sanctity of Life, Unity for 2026

Prominent Nigerian traditional and religious leaders have ushered in the year 2026 with powerful messages centered on the sanctity of human life, peaceful coexistence, and shared responsibility for national security. The Alaafin of Oyo, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, and the Bishop of Lagos (Anglican Communion) each issued separate New Year statements, calling for a collective moral and social rejuvenation across the nation.

A Sacred Charge: Alaafin Elevates Sanctity of Human Life

In a significant New Year address, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, placed the inherent value of every human being at the core of his message. The monarch, speaking through his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, on December 31, 2025, declared that respect for life must move beyond rhetoric and become a guiding principle in daily conduct.

Oba Owoade emphasized that human dignity is God-given and unassailable, extending from conception to natural death. He specifically highlighted the worth of unborn children, the elderly, individuals with special needs, and marginalized members of society. "To be created in the likeness of God means that each human bears His image and, with it, a value beyond unique characteristics or individual attributes," the Alaafin stated. He firmly argued that human worth is not contingent on ability or independence, asserting that "dependence on others does not diminish human worth."

Olubadan's Blueprint for a Modern, Peaceful Ibadan

Concurrently, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Dr. Rashidi Ladoja (Arusa I), called upon all indigenes and residents of the ancient city to make meaningful resolutions for peace, unity, and socio-economic revival. In a statement signed by his chief, Ayoade Solomon Olugbemiga, the former governor congratulated the people for witnessing the new year in good health.

Dr. Ladoja stressed that sustainable development is only possible through harmony and a shared sense of purpose. "I urge you all to be resolute on the progress and unity of Ibadanland, so as to jointly realise the modern Ibadanland of our dream," he declared. Revealing his personal commitment, the Olubadan added, "As for me, I have resolved to use the rest of my life to serve God and humanity as a good example for others to follow," reaffirming his dedication to selfless leadership.

Bishop Calls for Vigilance and Truthful Leadership

Adding a religious dimension to the national conversation, the Bishop of Lagos, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Rt. Rev. Gabriel Okupevi, charged Nigerians to take personal responsibility for the nation's peace and security. In his New Year message delivered in Lagos, the bishop called on leaders at all levels to act with integrity, justice, and compassion.

Bishop Okupevi encouraged citizens to adopt a proactive culture of vigilance, popularized by the phrase "when you see something, say something," reminding everyone that security is a collective concern. "Today, we rejoice that by His mercies we have entered a brand New Year, 2026," he said. "Let us continue to pray for our nation, speak positively, work diligently and uphold the values that honour God."

The unified messages from these influential figures from Oyo, Ibadan, and Lagos highlight a consensus on the foundational values needed for Nigeria's progress in 2026: a profound respect for life, a commitment to communal harmony, and an active, truth-driven citizenry.
