Massive Protest Erupts in Ijebu Ode Over Alleged Government Interference in Awujale Selection

On Friday, a significant and peaceful protest unfolded in Ijebu Ode, as residents voiced their strong opposition to what they perceive as an attempt by the Ogun State Government to impose the next Awujale. The demonstration saw crowds marching along Awujale Palace Road towards the Ijebu Ode Local Government Secretariat, expressing deep dissatisfaction with recent developments in the traditional selection process.

Background of the Selection Controversy

Earlier in the week, the Fusengbuwa Ruling House had submitted a list of over 90 eligible aspirants for consideration by the kingmakers. However, the Ogun State Government intervened, ordering a halt to the selection process until further notice. This directive, issued by Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Ganiyu Hamzat, cited alleged procedural flaws in the ruling house's submission. Subsequently, aspirants were reportedly summoned to the state headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS), fueling speculation and unrest among the populace.

Government's Stance and Public Reaction

The government's letter emphasized that the decision was made to maintain public order, safeguard the integrity of the selection process, and preserve the veneration of the vacant Awujale stool. This move has generated mixed reactions, with many residents accusing the state government of planning to impose a preferred candidate, thereby undermining traditional autonomy. It is worth noting that on December 18, 2025, the government had initially suspended the selection exercise due to identified procedural errors, which it warned could lead to legal disputes over the installation of a new Awujale.

Regent's Clarification and Ongoing Process

In response to the growing tensions, the Awujale regent, Olorogun Sunny Kuku, has debunked insinuations of government interference. He clarified that the governor is not directly involved in the selection exercise but is focused on ensuring a peaceful and rancour-free process. According to Kuku, the kingmakers are currently awaiting official reports from security agencies and other stakeholders before proceeding further, highlighting the complexity and sensitivity of the situation.

This protest underscores the deep-seated concerns within the Ijebu Ode community regarding the preservation of their cultural heritage and the autonomy of traditional institutions in the face of governmental oversight.
