Massive Eid Celebration at University of Ibadan Draws Over 5,000 Attendees
In a vibrant display of faith and community spirit, more than 5,000 Muslims converged at the University of Ibadan in Oyo State for the 9th edition of the Ibadan EidFest. The event, held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at the University of Ibadan Central Mosque, provided a festive conclusion to the Ramadan fasting period, offering families a unique opportunity to relax, connect, and celebrate together.
Event Origins and Community Impact
The convener of Ibadan EidFest, Barrister Mahmudat Yussuf, explained that the initiative began in 2018 to address the perception that Eid celebrations were often uneventful. "We felt that why can't we bring ourselves together, organise something befitting like an amusement park setting in a makeshift manner," she stated. The event has since grown into a significant annual gathering that promotes recreation while maintaining the spiritual essence of Ramadan.
Barrister Yussuf emphasized that the EidFest creates a platform for Muslims to enjoy recreation, extend greetings, share ideas, and connect after the demanding month of fasting. The gathering brings together diverse participants including children, young adults, parents, prominent Muslim clerics, academics, professionals, and students from across the community.
Attendee Experiences and Testimonials
Retired Controller of Correctional Service, Alhaji Iskil Yusuf, praised the event as "a beautiful thing that has come to stay." He highlighted how the EidFest allows for relaxation after Ramadan while fostering relationships based on Islamic principles. "Coming here is a way of relaxing after the end of Ramadan, and you meet fellow Muslim brothers and sisters where we can build up a relationship based on Islamic tenets," he noted.
The event also provided substantial benefits for children and business owners. Educational programs were available for young attendees, while entrepreneurs had opportunities to showcase their goods and services. Alhaji Yusuf added, "Children have the opportunity to expand their knowledge. There are a lot of benefits in this programme."
Balancing Recreation with Spiritual Lessons
Dr. Daud Amoo Alaga, an Ibadan-based Islamic scholar, advised attendees to maintain the spiritual discipline gained during Ramadan while enjoying the festivities. "All the organs of our body have been trained to act along with divine injunction. One of the biggest aspects of Ramadan is to uphold what we have been doing during Ramadan," he counseled. He praised the event for being conducted in an Islamic manner that brings joy to participants while preserving religious values.
Alhajj Abdul Rahman Balogun, Director of Media at the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and National President of the Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria, emphasized the communal blessings of such gatherings. "Before now, Muslim children did not have anywhere to go for recreation and to relax like their counterparts. But now, we have places to relax, connect and share ideas and experiences," he observed.
Activities and Youth Engagement
The 2026 EidFest featured an extensive array of activities designed for all age groups:
- Bounce houses of various sizes and trampolines
- Canoe paddling and horseback riding
- Scrabble, chess, and block building games
- Basketball and other physical activities
- Networking opportunities for young adults
One young adult participant, identified as Muslimah, described the program as "very interesting and fun-filled" and expressed gratitude to the organizers for their efforts.
Spiritual Guidance and Community Messages
During the celebrations, Professor Ibrahim Olatunde Uthman, Chief Imam of the University of Ibadan, delivered an important message to the faithful. He cautioned against defying constituted authorities while acknowledging the right to question leadership. The Imam stressed that protests causing destruction and pain contradict Islamic principles, emphasizing the importance of maintaining societal harmony.
The 9th edition of Ibadan EidFest successfully combined festive recreation with spiritual reflection, creating a model for post-Ramadan celebrations that strengthens community bonds while honoring religious traditions. As the event continues to grow, it represents an innovative approach to maintaining cultural and religious practices in contemporary society.
