Eid-el-Fitr Rituals and the Significance of Six Days of Fasting in Shawwal

In the name of the Almighty, the Beneficent, the Merciful, Muslims across Nigeria and beyond celebrate the completion of Ramadan with the joyous occasion of Eid-el-Fitr. As believers gather for prayers and festivities, it is essential to adhere to the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) to ensure the worship is performed correctly and meaningfully.

Preparations and Sunnah Practices for Eid

Muslims are encouraged to wake up early on Eid morning, observing the tahajjud prayer, which is a virtuous practice sustained from Ramadan. Taking a bath before Fajr prayers and wearing new or the best available clothes are meritorious deeds. Men are advised to use perfume, not only on Eid days but as a regular Sunnah. It is forbidden to fast on this day; instead, a light breakfast should be taken before heading to the prayer ground.

Setting out early for the eid prayer is recommended, with engagement in much glorification of Allah during the journey. The prayer is performed in congregation in open areas such as fields, community centres, or mosques, without the Adhan or Iqamah, as these are nawafil prayers. Listening to the khutbah (sermon) is a wajib requirement, and it is improper to leave, talk, walk about, or offer prayers during its delivery.

Charity and Sadaqat-ul-Fitr

In the tradition of the Prophet (SAW), Muslims are to give Sadaqat-ul-fitr, preferably before the eid prayers. This charity is paid on behalf of all household members, young and old, and can be given in kind, such as three to four seers of wheat, barley, rice, or other staple foods. Recently, Muslim scholars have addressed the monetization of this act based on public convenience, with many Islamic centres announcing specific amounts to be paid in cash. The intention behind this charity should be to extend happiness to those facing adversity, reflecting a desire for all brethren to share in the blessings granted by Allah.

Six Days of Fasting in Shawwal

Another recommended act of worship after Ramadan is observing six days of fasting in the month of Shawwal. The Prophet (SAW) said, "He who observes the fast throughout Ramadan and then follows it up with observing the fast on the first six days of Shawwal is as if he had observed the fast throughout the year." Scholars clarify that these six days can be observed at any time during Shawwal, not necessarily consecutively, offering flexibility for believers.

This practice enhances spiritual rewards and continuity in devotion beyond Ramadan. Muslims are encouraged to seize this opportunity to deepen their faith and seek Allah's pleasure through additional fasting.

Prayers and Reflections

As the holy month concludes, Muslims offer prayers for acceptance of their fasting and deeds, seeking forgiveness and guidance. A common supplication includes: "O Allah! Let us complete the month of Ramadan in such a manner to meet Your satisfaction; spare us from Your punishment and the Fire of Hell and let our final abode be in Your Paradise. O Allah! Let us live to fast Ramadan for many years to come and many times to elapse. O Allah! Accept our fasting and prayers during the Holy Month; forgive our mistakes and sins and help us observe Your commands to be prepared for what is to come. O Allah! Let us be steadfast in the right path all the time, whether during Ramadan or beyond Ramadan." Aameen!

By following these rituals and recommendations, Muslims in Nigeria can fully embrace the blessings of Eid-el-Fitr and the spiritual benefits of Shawwal fasting, fostering community unity and personal growth in faith.
