A Nigerian lady has sparked a wave of reactions on social media platform X after revealing that her family has been paying the same rent for their three-bedroom apartment in Lagos since 2020. According to her, the landlord has never increased the rent, which stands at N250,000 per annum.
Details of the Rent Revelation
The lady, identified as Taiwo, shared her experience in a tweet on May 6, 2026. She stated that the apartment is fully tiled, fenced, has POP ceilings, and all amenities remain intact. She noted that similar houses in her area now go for as much as N1.2 million, emphasizing that good landlords still exist.
Taiwo wrote: "We've been in our 3-bedroom apartment for 6 years now and our landlord has never increased the rent. Fully tiled, water, fenced, POP… everything intact. We're still paying 250k since 2020. Meanwhile, similar houses in my area are going for 1.2m. Good landlords still exist o."
In the comment section, Taiwo added that her landlord resides outside the country. The revelation has drawn widespread attention due to the high cost of rent in Lagos currently.
Mixed Reactions from Netizens
The post generated a flurry of comments, with many praising the landlord and others seeking to know the location of the apartment.
User @Mmanua_pro speculated: "N250k since 2020 and the current price is N1.2m per annum in that area for a 3-bedroom apartment? If that's not in Ikorodu, then it has to be Epe. Other than that, you're living in Ogun State; probably Sango-Ota."
@snowballfoods shared a similar experience: "Just like my landlord before he died, he doesn't add money and it's very cheap. When the man died, the landlady just increased the rent by 50k, as if she was waiting for the landlord to die."
@kunle_aremu commented: "Your landlord must be a very good man for that house rent price since 2020."
@joy_ciana asked: "Wait, where is your location? 3 bedroom with all those things you mentioned for 250k? Help me find a house in your area."
@IyelolaIge remarked: "Some landlords have human feelings. Also, you'll know the landlord didn't really build the house to earn; he has other sources of income and he's not greedy."
@Iamkolotayo added: "My landlord is that kind of person. He moved me from a 2-bedroom for 400k to a 3-bedroom first floor without adding any kobo last year April. He even gave me another agreement which was effective this year January. Special landlords still exist in this Lagos."
Background on Lagos Rent Crisis
This revelation comes amid reports that Lagos residents are struggling with soaring rents, which consume up to 70% of their income. A recent report by Fortren & Company titled "What does it really cost to rent in Africa?" ranked Lagos as the fourth most expensive rental city in Africa, behind Abidjan, Cape Town, and Accra. The report noted that renting a luxury two-bedroom apartment in upscale neighborhoods like Ikoyi, Banana Island, and Victoria Island costs an average of $19,379 (about N26.8 million) annually.
This story highlights the disparity in rental costs across Lagos and the appreciation for landlords who maintain affordable rents.
