Mallam Haruna Dazigau Tijjani, a revered Islamic scholar from Bolori, Maiduguri, passed away and was buried on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at his residence on Goni Tijjani Street. The burial, which took place at 4:00 p.m., followed Islamic rites and drew mourners from the community.
Death Announced by Media Strategist Ibn Maigana
Ibn Maigana, a Borno-born media strategist and native of Maiduguri, announced the death via a Facebook post on the same day. He described Tijjani as a respected scholar whose teachings left a lasting impact on many in the Bolori community. Maigana also noted a close, long-standing friendship between the late scholar and his own father, making the loss deeply personal.
In his tribute, Maigana wrote: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un! This is to announce the passing of Malam Haruna Tijjani Dazigau, a renowned Islamic scholar in Bolori who has taught many of us in different ways. His Janaza has been scheduled for 4pm at his residence in Bolori, Maiduguri, along Goni Tijjani Street. Until his death, Malam was a very good brother and friend to my father. May Allah rest his soul."
Tributes Pour In for Late Scholar
Maigana called on followers to pray for the eternal rest of the deceased, underscoring Tijjani's role as a revered figure whose influence extended beyond formal religious circles in Maiduguri. The scholar was laid to rest in the Bolori area of Borno state, northeast Nigeria, following his death on the same day.
The passing of Tijjani comes amid a series of losses in Nigeria's Islamic community. In a similar vein, Alhaji Jibril Baba Nnatakun, the chief imam of Shonga, a historic Nupe community in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara state, also passed away. His death drew reactions from Muslim faithful and community leaders, including Mohammed Baba Ibrahim (MBI), a prominent political figure in Kwara North.
Other Recent Deaths in Nigeria's Islamic Community
MBI issued a formal condolence message addressed to the Emir of Shonga, Alhaji Haliru Yahaya Ndanusa, the Shonga Descendants Development Union (SHEDDU), and the broader Shonga Emirate. In his tribute, MBI described Nnatakun as a devoted scholar and spiritual leader whose service spanned several decades, marked by humility, wisdom, and dedication to spreading Islamic teachings.
Additionally, Sheikh Tijani Gbajabiamila, the Olori Ratibi of Lagos, also passed away at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). His son, Ibikunle Lateef, confirmed the death on Facebook. The late Sheikh was buried on the day of his death at Iponri Central Mosque, in accordance with Islamic rites.
