Nigeria hosts some of the world's most influential Pentecostal congregations, and a new ranking by StatiSense on X has spotlighted the nine largest. The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) tops the list, followed by Living Faith Church Worldwide (Winners Chapel), Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), and Deeper Christian Life Ministry. The list, however, stirred controversy in the comments, with critics noting the absence of Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) and Cherubim and Seraphim (C&S), as well as disagreements over the order of the churches listed.
RCCG: Nigeria's Pentecostal Giant
Founded in 1952, RCCG is widely considered Nigeria's most prominent Pentecostal church and one of the largest globally, with a presence in over 190 countries. Pastor Enoch Adeboye, who has led the church since 1981, has overseen its expansion from a small congregation to an international ministry that draws millions to its annual Holy Ghost Congress. Winners Chapel and Its Expansive Reach
Living Faith Church Worldwide, better known as Winners Chapel, was founded in 1981 and has grown into one of Africa's largest congregations. Its Faith Tabernacle in Ota, Ogun State, ranks among the world's biggest church auditoriums. Bishop David Oyedepo, the founder and Presiding Bishop, has also built an extensive educational network, including Covenant University and Landmark University, alongside sprawling church campuses in Nigeria and abroad.
MFM and Deeper Life: Distinctive Ministries
Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), founded in Lagos, is renowned for its aggressive prayer culture and deliverance-focused theology. Under Dr Daniel Olukoya, the General Overseer, MFM has established branches across Nigeria and in dozens of countries, with early-morning prayer sessions and revival programmes drawing large crowds to its Lagos headquarters. Deeper Christian Life Ministry, founded in 1973, emphasizes holiness and disciplined Bible study under Pastor William Folorunso Kumuyi. Dunamis and Christ Embassy: Modern Growth
Dunamis International Gospel Centre, headquartered in Abuja, is one of Nigeria's fastest-growing churches, with the Glory Dome seating tens of thousands. Pastor Paul Enenche and his wife, Pastor Becky, lead the church, known for vibrant worship and social outreach. Christ Embassy, or Believers' Loveworld Incorporated, is a media-driven ministry founded by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome. Its LoveWorld Networks gives it a vast online and television presence, with congregations across Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
COZA, Lord's Chosen, and Daystar: Diverse Followings
The Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA), led by Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo, attracts Nigeria's youth and urban professionals with its modern worship and large Abuja campus. The Lord's Chosen Charismatic Revival Movement, under Pastor Lazarus Muoka, is known for mass crusades and evangelistic activities, drawing enormous crowds to open-air meetings. The StatiSense list, while highlighting these nine churches, faced pushback from Nigerians who argued that CCC and C&S, which are Aladura churches, should have been included. Others questioned the ranking order, suggesting some churches deserved higher positions. Despite the debate, the list underscores Nigeria's significant role in global Pentecostalism, with these churches collectively impacting millions of worshippers and shaping religious life across the nation and beyond.
