Mafkon recounted how the couple married at a very young age before her husband left Africa for the United States. He later returned to bring her to the US, where they faced significant financial hardship in Houston, Texas. The couple lived paycheck to paycheck, sharing a single mobile phone because they couldn't afford two lines, and driving a car without air conditioning or a heater, even in the sweltering Texas heat.
"We literally had nothing but each other and that's what keeps us going," Mafkon wrote, describing their early days. She recalled visiting the mall with a zero balance in the bank, yet they remained hopeful.
