Google, in a strategic partnership with Slum2School Africa and the renowned Nigerian comedian Samuel Perry, widely known as Broda Shaggi, has officially launched an innovative educational initiative titled "Stories from Our Home." This project introduces a culturally themed folktale colouring book specifically designed to benefit children residing in underserved communities across Nigeria. The primary objective of this endeavor is to address and mitigate the significant gaps in access to creative and engaging educational materials that many young learners face in their formative years.
Bridging Educational Gaps with Technology and Creativity
Powered by Google's advanced generative AI system, Gemini, the initiative aims to distribute 1,000 copies of the colouring book to primary school pupils. This effort directly responds to the acute shortage of learning tools observed in numerous nursery classrooms, where children frequently lack basic creative resources such as colouring books and crayons. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, the project transforms traditional African folklore into print-ready line art, making cultural heritage accessible and interactive for the younger generation.
The development process involved a collaborative "Imagination Workshop" led by Broda Shaggi and featuring other prominent Nigerian creatives like Falz and Layi Wasabi. During this workshop, participants shared rich cultural stories and cherished childhood memories, which were then meticulously transformed into illustrations using Gemini. This approach ensured the creation of engaging, child-friendly visuals that are deeply rooted in Nigerian heritage. The final publication was produced by Inked Memory, adhering to stringent educational and child-focused standards to maximize its impact.
Commitment to Education and Cultural Preservation
Otto Orondaam, the founder of Slum2School Africa, emphasized that this project reflects the organization's unwavering commitment to utilizing education as a powerful tool to break the cycle of poverty. He stated, "Education begins long before a child enters a classroom—it starts with the stories they hear and the materials they engage with. This project ensures that every child, regardless of background, has access to resources that shape identity and inspire growth." The book was officially unveiled at the Slum2School Innovation Hub in Lekki, Lagos, where children participated in interactive reading sessions, fostering a dynamic learning environment.
At the launch event, Google West Africa Director Olumide Balogun read a story on the Great Rivers of Nigeria, while guest readers Nancy Isime and Bisola Aiyeola shared narratives about Nigerian heritage, including the Walls of Benin and Queen Moremi Ajasoro. Broda Shaggi highlighted the personal significance of the initiative, saying, "I know what it feels like to grow up without access to basic learning tools. Being part of a project that puts these resources into the hands of children means everything to me." Each participating child received a "Dream Pack" containing the colouring book, crayons, notebooks, pencils, and educational games, all designed to promote creative play and cognitive development.

The event also featured a painting contest, with Akintunde Daniella emerging as the winner and being rewarded with a bicycle and other prizes.
