Gunmen Kill 2 Miners at Plateau Mining Site Despite Curfew

Suspected gunmen opened fire at a mining site near the boundary between Kuru Jenta in Jos South Local Government Area and Heipang in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing two people. The attack occurred at approximately 11:30 pm on Friday, October 2, 2026, while the victims were working at the site, according to a community member who confirmed the deaths on October 3.

Two Miners Killed in Late-Night Attack

Weng Bulus, a member of the affected community, confirmed that both victims were from the Heipang District. "Two persons from Heipang District were shot dead by suspected gunmen at the mining site around Kuru Jenta last night," Bulus said. The attack took place during the hours covered by a curfew imposed by the Plateau State government, raising concerns about compliance with movement restrictions.

Bulus urged residents to respect the curfew and avoid working at mining sites during the night, warning that such movements could expose them to security risks. "Residents should not violate the curfew, particularly by engaging in night mining, as such movements could expose them to security risks," he said.

Community Leaders Condemn Killings, Call for Justice

Rwang Tengwong, spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders Association, also condemned the killings and called on security agencies to act. "This killing is unfortunate. We condemn it in totality. We call on security operatives to investigate the killing, identify those responsible and bring them to justice," Tengwong said. He echoed Bulus's warning, urging miners specifically to stop conducting operations after dark.

Efforts to obtain a response from the Plateau State Police Command spokesman, Alabo Alfred, were unsuccessful as his phone was switched off at the time of this report. The incident adds to concerns about security in the region, where mining activities have previously been targeted by armed groups.

Curfew Violation Raises Security Concerns

The attack highlights the risks faced by miners operating during restricted hours, despite government-imposed curfews. Community leaders have repeatedly warned against night mining, which they say makes workers vulnerable to attacks. The Plateau State government has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident, and the police command has not provided an official response.

The killings have heightened tensions in the area, with residents calling for increased security patrols and stricter enforcement of curfew regulations. The Berom Youth Moulders Association's call for a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible reflects the community's demand for justice. As of now, no arrests have been reported, and the identity of the gunmen remains unknown.
