From Petty Crime to Armed Robbery
Oyenusi's early life was marked by poverty and limited education, leading him into crime at a young age. According to reports, he started with petty theft before progressing to car theft and armed robbery. One account by The Independent claimed his earliest major crime involved stealing a car because his girlfriend needed money, an operation that ended with the death of the car owner. Oyenusi then sold the vehicle and gave the proceeds to his girlfriend.
Despite his violent reputation, some accounts described him as affectionate and generous toward those close to him, though he had a dangerous temper. His life was full of contradictions, but his criminal path was clear.
The Rise of "Dr Oyenusi"
As his criminal activities grew, Oyenusi adopted the nickname "Dr Oyenusi," despite not being a medical doctor. This title became part of his persona, and he was also referred to as "Doctor Rob and Kill," reflecting the brutality of his gang's operations. He led an organised gang that used firearms and intimidation to target businesses, factories, and wealthy individuals across Lagos and parts of the South-West.
By the late 1960s and early 1970s, Oyenusi's boldness made him one of the most feared figures in Lagos. Some believed he was protected by charms and could not be captured, a belief he reinforced by boasting about surviving dangerous situations. However, the police continued their hunt.
The WAHUM Industries Robbery and Arrest
One of Oyenusi's most notable crimes was the WAHUM Industries robbery in Ikeja, Lagos, in 1971. During the operation, he and his gang escaped with about £28,000, a significant sum at the time, and a police officer was killed. This incident intensified the police pursuit, and Oyenusi was eventually arrested in 1971.
He was tried alongside gang members, convicted of armed robbery and related offences, and sentenced to death by firing squad along with six others. For authorities, the execution was a message to other criminals as Nigeria battled violent robbery.
Execution at Bar Beach
On September 8, 1971, Oyenusi was taken to Bar Beach in Lagos for execution. Thousands gathered to witness the event. Reports described him as calm and confident, reportedly smiling as he was led to the firing squad. Some attributed his confidence to his belief in charms; others saw it as a final display of his personality. Before the execution, he reportedly said: "I am dying for the offence I have committed." Moments later, soldiers fired, ending his life.
Legacy of Ishola Oyenusi
More than five decades after his death, Oyenusi's name remains recognised in Nigeria's crime history. His story has been retold in books, newspaper reports, and films, including Eddie Ugbomah's 1977 movie "The Rise and Fall of Dr Oyenusi" and a later Nollywood adaptation titled "Oyenusi," starring Odunlade Adekola. His life remains a controversial chapter in Nigeria's history, a tale of a man who rose from petty crime to become one of Lagos' most feared criminals, only to die by the same violence that defined his reign.
