Over 100 Lawyers Complete CITN Tax Conversion Training on New Laws

Approximately 103 legal practitioners have successfully completed the March 2026 edition of the legal practitioners’ conversion training programme organized by the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN). The three-day virtual training provided in-depth sessions on newly enacted tax laws and advanced topics such as transfer pricing, taxation law, applied taxation, basic accounting, tax audit and investigation, and emerging trends in the global tax environment.

Structured Curriculum Aligns with CITN Tax Academy

The conversion training is carefully structured to align with the curriculum of the CITN Tax Academy and to reflect current developments within Nigeria’s evolving fiscal landscape. According to the institute, this ensures participants receive up-to-date knowledge that is directly applicable to professional practice.

President Ohagwa Highlights Multidisciplinary Nature of Taxation

In his remarks, President and Chairman in Council of CITN, Innocent Ohagwa, emphasized that taxation is inherently multidisciplinary and evolving, sitting at the intersection of law, economics, business, accounting, and related fields. Represented by Council Member Funsho Abidakun, Ohagwa noted that while lawyers already possess a deep understanding of Nigeria’s legal framework, becoming an effective tax professional requires more than a grasp of statutes.

"It demands the ability to interpret those statutes within the context of finance, business, accounting, economics, and tax code computations," he said. Ohagwa added that the enactment of new tax laws has strategically and ethically elevated the role of the tax profession, directly touching on CITN’s mandate under its enabling Act.

Fowokan Commends Participants for Foresight

Chairman of the CITN Tax Academy Committee, Dr. Titilayo Fowokan, commended the participants, stating that their presence reflected foresight and the growing importance of the intersection between law and taxation in today’s dynamic economic environment. She assured that the programme provides a valuable pathway to deeper competence, enhanced professional capacity, and formal recognition within Nigeria’s evolving tax landscape.

"By expanding your expertise to include taxation, you position yourself as even more strategic contributors to national development and fiscal governance," Fowokan said.

Training Equips Lawyers with Comprehensive Tax Knowledge

During the training, the legal luminaries were equipped with various courses on taxation and financial analysis, as well as insights into new tax reforms, delivered by erudite facilitators. This comprehensive approach ensures that participants are well-prepared to navigate complex tax issues and contribute effectively to the profession.
