Oluwami Dosunmu-Ogunbi, a Nigerian-born researcher, has etched her name in history as the first Black woman to earn a PhD in Robotics Engineering from the University of Michigan. The milestone was celebrated during the College of Engineering convocation, where she addressed fellow graduates with a message of gratitude and purpose.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dosunmu-Ogunbi, the daughter of Nigerian immigrants, emphasized that her success was not a solitary effort. “I do not stand here on my own two feet alone. None of us got here by our individual merit alone, whether it be teacher, friends, family, mentors, or role models, we each have one or multiple people to whom we are grateful for making this moment possible,” she said.
Beyond the Historic Title
While acknowledging the significance of being “the first,” Dosunmu-Ogunbi made it clear that her ambitions stretch far beyond that label. She articulated a vision of engineering that prioritizes social impact and community service. “A Michigan Engineer is one who does not just provide scientific and technological leadership, but is also one who is intellectually curious, socially conscious, creates collaborative solutions to societal problems, and promotes an inclusive and innovative community of service for the common good,” she stated.
Reflecting on her journey, she admitted that her initial motivations for pursuing engineering were “frivolous” but later transformed into a deeper calling. “We each have a solemn duty to make positive contributions to the world. Well, my reasons for becoming an engineer were initially frivolous, but they eventually moved into something more meaningful. I want to have a positive impact on the world,” she added.
A Champion of Diversity and Mentorship
Dosunmu-Ogunbi’s doctoral journey was marked by more than just academic achievement. According to the University of Michigan's Robotics Department, her path reflects the experience of many PhD students who begin without a clear destination but eventually grow into accomplished researchers through persistence and hard work.
Beyond her research, she was a dedicated advocate for diversity in STEM. She received the MLK Spirit Award from the College of Engineering in recognition of her mentorship and leadership. From 2021 to 2023, she served as a Robotics Outreach Ambassador, championing inclusive education and inspiring younger students to pursue robotics.

Dosunmu-Ogunbi was also the runner-up in the College of Engineering's Three-Minute Thesis Competition, a challenging event that tests researchers' ability to communicate complex ideas concisely.
