When Dr. Oluwami Dosunmu-Ogunbi crossed the stage at the University of Michigan College of Engineering convocation, she carried more than a doctoral hood. The Nigerian-born engineer etched her name into the institution's history as the first Black woman to earn a PhD in Robotics Engineering, a feat that has sparked pride and admiration far beyond the Michigan campus.
In her convocation speech, Dosunmu-Ogunbi, the daughter of Nigerian immigrants, made it clear that her success was not achieved in isolation. “I do not stand here on my own two feet alone,” she said. “None of us got here by our individual merit alone, whether it be teacher, friends, family, mentors, or role models, we each have one or multiple people to whom we are grateful for making this moment possible.”
She went on to define the ethos of a Michigan Engineer, urging her peers to embrace a broader vision of their roles. “A Michigan Engineer is one who does not just provide scientific and technological leadership, but is also one who is intellectually curious, socially conscious, creates collaborative solutions to societal problems, and promotes an inclusive and innovative community of service for the common good,” she said.
Dosunmu-Ogunbi also reflected on her personal evolution from a student with casual ambitions to a researcher driven by purpose. “We each have a solemn duty to make positive contributions to the world,” she added. “Well, my reasons for becoming an engineer were initially frivolous, but they eventually moved into something more meaningful. I want to have a positive impact on the world.”
A Historic Achievement in Robotics Engineering
The University of Michigan Robotics Department has described Dosunmu-Ogunbi’s doctoral journey as one that mirrors the experiences of many PhD students — initially lacking a clear roadmap but ultimately flourishing through resilience and hard work. Her engagement with the wider academic community also includes a runner-up finish at the College of Engineering’s Three-Minute Thesis Competition, where she demonstrated a rare ability to communicate complex research to a general audience. She has also been inducted into the Bouchet Society, a prestigious scholarly honour society that celebrates outstanding scholarship and promotes diversity and inclusion in graduate education.
