NIS Urges Prosecution of Land Grabbers Over Attacks on Members in Ogun
The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Ogun State chapter, has made a strong appeal to the state government to prosecute land grabbers in strict accordance with the anti-grabbing law and other existing statutes. This call was issued by the Chairman of NIS, Abiodun Liadi, during a walk organized by the association across major streets in Abeokuta to commemorate the 2026 Global Surveyors' Day, which carried the theme: "Surveyors Challenges In Multi-Sectoral Growth."
Alarming Attacks on Surveyors
Liadi raised serious concerns over a series of attacks targeting NIS members by land grabbers in Ogun State. He emphasized that it is high time for the government to take decisive action and begin prosecuting these offenders to ensure the safety and security of surveyors. The chairman highlighted that such attacks not only threaten the lives of professionals but also hinder the progress of land management and development projects in the state.
Lagos Surveyors Called to Political Engagement
In a related development, surveyors in Lagos State have been urged to take active roles in politics and governance as part of their professional responsibility. This call was led by the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during the 2026 yearly general meeting and luncheon of the Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN), Lagos State branch. The event was themed "Politics and Governance: Enhancing Value-Driven Leadership in the Professional and Political Landscape."
Wahab, represented by ministry official Adewusi Ademola, stressed that professionals in politics must champion value-driven governance. He noted, "Who gets what, when, and how hinges on leadership quality, which dictates people's quality of life." However, he lamented the absence of key professionals from the built environment in governance roles, advising that their expertise is crucial for state development.
Professional Dialogue and Development
Also speaking at the event, Afolabi Olaoluwa, Chairman of APPSN, Lagos State branch, described the gathering as more than a statutory requirement. He stated that it serves as a cornerstone for collective reflection on the year's journey, encouraging members to engage in constructive dialogue to foster innovation, collaboration, and professional growth.
The Guest of Honour and Chairman of NIS, Lagos State branch, Adedeji Olanrewaju, remarked that the theme was timely, as integrity and accountability are essential for producing effective leaders. He urged surveyors to promote best practices, mentor young professionals, and remain committed to advancing the profession while promoting excellence in leadership.
Additionally, Simepiriye Kalio, National Chairman of APPSN and Special Guest of Honour, emphasized that the theme is a call for surveyors to awaken from professional slumber and compete in political, administrative, and industrial spheres, as well as seek higher positions to influence policy and development.
