Professor Lawrence Ezemonye Honored at 70th Birthday Celebration
Last Saturday, a distinguished assembly of Nigerian academic leaders, industry experts, and policymakers convened at the Indoor Sports Hall of the University of Benin to celebrate the 70th birthday of Professor Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye. The event honored his roles as Vice-Chancellor of Igbinedion University Okada and Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities.
Multifaceted Celebration Highlights Academic Legacy
The birthday festivities featured a well-orchestrated blend of academic, spiritual, and cultural elements. Activities included a eucharistic celebration, a validatory colloquium, the launch of three books, heartfelt testimonials, music, dance, and a reunion. This gathering underscored Professor Ezemonye's over three decades in academia, which have significantly advanced multidisciplinary, multi-institutional, and multinational research for human development.
Chief Lucky Igbinedion, a former two-time executive governor of Edo State and chairman of the occasion, praised Professor Ezemonye as a model of excellent leadership, sportsmanship, and innovation. Similarly, Professor Edoba Omoregie, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin and chief host, highlighted how Ezemonye's academic services have expanded the frontiers of human knowledge, noting his humane and collegial disposition as a cornerstone of their friendship.
Academic Leadership and Institutional Impact
Professor Tanko Ishaya, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, also commended Ezemonye, an award-winning alumnus, for his commitment to mentoring the next generation of scientists and leaders. Before his current role at Igbinedion University, Professor Ezemonye established himself as a renowned academic leader at the University of Benin, where he served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and held a professorship in Animal and Environmental Biology.
In these positions, he demonstrated a compelling mix of administrative competence and academic vision, strengthening institutional structures, promoting research excellence, enhancing educational quality, and fostering a culture of excellence. His leadership gained further prominence in 2018 when he became Vice-Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Nigeria's premier private university.
Innovative Policies and Technological Advancements
Since assuming office, Professor Ezemonye has implemented policies aimed at expanding research capacity, improving academic standards, fostering innovation, and accelerating national development. For instance, in response to Nigeria's security challenges, he established the Buratai Centre for Contemporary Security Studies. To address food security, he leveraged his leadership to set up a state-of-the-art oil palm plantation within the university's precincts.
Under his stewardship, Igbinedion University has reinforced its reputation as a center for quality education and research, evolving into one of Nigeria's leading smart campuses. This transformation involves the sophisticated integration of digital infrastructure with modern education models, positioning the university as a forward-thinking contributor to Nigeria's smart education landscape. By prioritizing technology-enabled academic excellence, he has created an environment where students acquire professional skills and values to contribute meaningfully to society.
Entrepreneurship and Skills-Based Education
A key aspect of Professor Ezemonye's contributions to sustainable national development is his emphasis on entrepreneurship and skills-based education. He has institutionalized entrepreneurship as a core course for all undergraduates from their second year, envisioning a society where graduates are empowered to drive development, create jobs, and generate value-adding solutions.
Under his leadership, the university has developed enterprise incubation hubs, mentorship programs, and student start-up support systems. Regular student product exhibitions showcase innovation and practical skills, such as during the 25th anniversary celebration last year, where students displayed life-enhancing pharmaceutical products that impressed policymakers and industry experts. This pragmatic approach shifts education from theory to job creation and self-employment, helping to alleviate Nigeria's labor challenges.
National and International Scientific Contributions
Professor Ezemonye's involvement in national and international scientific organizations further highlights his commitment to human development. Believing that science should serve society, guide policy, and promote sustainable development, he played a pioneering role as the First President and Chairman of Council for the Institute of Environmental Practitioners of Nigeria. He also served as the pioneer Director of the National Centre for Energy and Environment under the Energy Commission of Nigeria, contributing to initiatives on renewable energy and sustainable environmental management, thus positioning Nigeria in global sustainability discussions.
Scholarly Output and Enduring Legacy
With over two hundred scientific publications and numerous conference presentations, Professor Ezemonye's scholarly work is impressive, addressing critical issues in environmental toxicology and ecological risk assessment. His research contributes to the global understanding of environmental pollution's impacts on food safety, biodiversity, and public health.
As Professor Ezemonye reflects on 70 years of meaningful contributions to human flourishing, his well-wishers hope he continues to serve God, humanity, and his country. May his scholarship and leadership remain engines of societal transformation, inspiring students, colleagues, young scholars, and university administrators that intellectual excellence and commitment to humanity can leave a lasting legacy.
