The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Federal Government of Nigeria to inaugurate the Generation Unlimited Nigeria (GenU 9JA) National Secretariat. This initiative is designed to significantly broaden access to skills training, employment avenues, and economic opportunities for young people throughout the nation.
Formal Inauguration and Strategic Placement
The Secretariat was officially launched on March 31, 2026, and is strategically housed within the Office of the Vice President. This placement underscores a renewed and dedicated commitment to positioning youth at the forefront of Nigeria's developmental agenda, as emphasized by key stakeholders involved in the project.
In an official statement, UNICEF hailed this development as a significant milestone in the ongoing endeavors to equip millions of Nigerian youths with essential digital competencies, diverse learning opportunities, and viable pathways to sustainable employment.
Expansive Reach and Ambitious Targets
Originally launched in 2021, the GenU 9JA initiative has already made substantial progress, reaching over 11 million young Nigerians across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The program places particular emphasis on empowering young women and individuals from underserved and marginalized communities.
With an ambitious target to positively impact 20 million youths by 2030, the establishment of this national secretariat is viewed as a critical and pivotal step towards scaling interventions and enhancing coordination among all participating partners.
