COWA Launches Green Schools and Climate Ambassadors to Promote Environmental Protection

The Customs Officers' Wives Association (COWA) has taken a significant step in the fight against climate change by launching the "Adopt-a-School Campaign" and inaugurating Sustainability and Green Border Ambassadors in Idiroko. This initiative aims to promote cleaner air, encourage environmental responsibility, and combat climate change in border communities across Nigeria.

Emphasizing Climate Action in Schools and Communities

Speaking at the event, the National President of COWA, Mrs. Kikelomo Adeniyi, highlighted that climate action must begin in schools, homes, and communities. She explained that the programme's theme, "Green Barracks, Green Borders: Advancing Environmental Stewardship for a Carbon-Responsible Future," is designed to prepare future leaders on the importance of a healthy environment.

"We are not just planting trees today; we are planting responsibility and leadership in our children. Climate action begins in our schools, homes, and communities," Adeniyi stated. She stressed that schools serve as the most effective platforms for addressing climate challenges such as rising temperatures, flooding, and environmental pollution.

Nurturing Environmentally Conscious Students

The COWA president added that the initiative focuses on nurturing environmentally conscious students who understand the value of tree planting, waste reduction, and sustainable living. These actions are presented as practical ways to protect the climate and improve air quality.

"One tree can absorb carbon dioxide, improve the air we breathe, and protect our environment. When multiplied across communities, these small actions make a big difference," she emphasized. The programme aims to instill these values in young minds to foster long-term environmental stewardship.

Alignment with National and Global Goals

The Acting Customs Area Controller of Ogun I Area Command, Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Afeni, described the programme as timely and aligned with both national and global environmental goals. "A greener border environment is essential not only for our communities but also for achieving safe, secure, and prosperous borders," Afeni noted.

He pointed out that the Green Border Initiative complements the mandate of the Nigeria Customs Service by strengthening partnerships with host communities while promoting sustainability. This collaboration is seen as crucial for enhancing border security and environmental health.

Event Features and Future Commitments

The launch event featured various activities, including tree planting, environmental education workshops, and the induction of student ambassadors. These elements were designed to provide hands-on learning experiences and empower students to become advocates for environmental protection.

COWA reaffirmed its commitment to building green schools, fostering greener borders, and ensuring a sustainable future through grassroots climate action. The association plans to expand these efforts to more communities, emphasizing the role of local initiatives in achieving broader environmental objectives.

This initiative by COWA represents a proactive approach to addressing climate change, leveraging education and community engagement to create a lasting impact on Nigeria's environmental landscape.
