The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has initiated plans to rehabilitate the infrastructure of Ife Girls High School, Modakeke, in Ife Local Government Area of Osun State, under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, Customs Cares. The Service disclosed this in a statement shared on its official X handle on Monday.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, announced the planned intervention during an assessment visit to the school on May 29, 2026, to evaluate the scope of work required before rehabilitation activities commence. According to the statement, the visit formed part of the Service’s ongoing efforts to identify and address critical needs in public institutions through the Customs Cares Initiative, with education listed among the programme’s key priority areas.
Speaking during the inspection, Adeniyi said the decision to intervene followed reports on the condition of the school as well as a firsthand assessment of its facilities. “There is so much to be done here, and what I have come to do is a preliminary assessment of the scope of work required,” he said. The Customs boss noted that the school, which was established more than 60 years ago, had once been known for academic excellence and a disciplined learning environment but had suffered years of neglect that negatively impacted its infrastructure and educational standards. He expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of classrooms, laboratories, sanitary facilities and the school library. He also pointed to overgrown sections of the premises, describing them as unsafe for students.
Adeniyi assured that the rehabilitation project would be implemented in a manner that would not disrupt academic activities. He added that necessary approvals had been secured and consultations with relevant stakeholders were ongoing to facilitate smooth execution of the project. The Comptroller-General further urged school management, parents and members of the host community to take ownership of the facilities after rehabilitation, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in sustaining development projects. “We are determined to contribute towards creating a conducive learning environment that will inspire students and support educational development,” he stated.
The Principal of Ife Girls High School, Mrs. Akinremi Martina, welcomed the intervention, describing it as timely and impactful. She expressed optimism that the project would significantly improve learning conditions and help reposition the institution for greater academic achievements. Also speaking, Managing Director of Oak Builders Company, Engr. Kehinde Adeyimo, who conducted a technical assessment of the school, identified major structural challenges, including damaged perimeter fencing and encroachment on parts of the school premises. According to him, these issues would require urgent attention during the rehabilitation process to improve security and preserve the integrity of the institution.
The planned intervention is expected to enhance the school’s learning environment, strengthen security within the premises and contribute to the broader development of education in the community through the Customs Cares Initiative.
