FG Inaugurates N8.5 Billion Land Swap Infrastructure Project at FGC Kano
The Federal Government has officially launched a major infrastructure development initiative at the Federal Government College (FGC) in Kano, valued at N8.5 billion. The project, inaugurated by the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad, aims to transform the unity school into a National Centre of Excellence by addressing critical infrastructure gaps.
Project Scope and Components
This capital-intensive undertaking involves the construction of 18 new structures and the renovation of 15 existing facilities. Key components of the project include:
- A new students' hostel to accommodate more learners
- A modern ICT center to enhance digital education
- An indoor sports complex for student athletics
- A skills acquisition center for vocational training
- A fully equipped clinic for student healthcare
- Staff accommodation to improve working conditions
- A Corper's Lounge for National Youth Service Corps members
The project also encompasses comprehensive renovation, remodeling, and upgrading of various other college facilities to create a more conducive learning environment.
Land Swap PPP Model Implementation
During the groundbreaking ceremony in Kano, Professor Ahmad explained that the project is being executed through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model with a land swap component. Under this arrangement:
- The private investor will construct the education and health facilities at FGC Kano
- In exchange, the Federal Government will provide 10 hectares of land to the investor
- The total investment value is approximately N8.5 billion
The minister emphasized that the PPP model was specifically chosen to bridge the infrastructure deficit in unity schools across Nigeria. "Considering the competing demands across various sectors of the economy amid limited resources," she stated, "the government considered the land swap agreement through the PPP model as a vital alternative to address the infrastructure deficits in the unity schools."
Stakeholder Perspectives and Political Context
Muzadiq Talle, Managing Director of the participating agro-allied company, confirmed that investors are committing approximately N8.5 billion to upgrade the educational facility while supporting the Federal Government's efforts to improve critical assets in the education sector.
Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by Commissioner for Land Abduljabbar Garko, called for increased stakeholder engagement to address public concerns about the project's rationale. The governor emphasized the importance of transparent communication with both internal and external publics to build confidence in the initiative.
In a separate but related political development, former presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso has welcomed former Kano State Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo into the African Democratic Congress (ADC). This move follows Kwankwaso's own recent defection to the ADC from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), signaling ongoing political realignments in the region.
