EcoSmart Club Empowers 50 Persons with Disabilities in Oyo State with Climate Disaster Preparedness Training
A youth-led climate action organization, EcoSmart Club, has successfully conducted a comprehensive training program for approximately 50 young persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Oyo State. This initiative is focused on enhancing climate disaster preparedness as part of a broader effort to foster inclusive climate resilience across communities.
GreenAbility Initiative Drives Inclusive Climate Action
The training was organized under Phase Two of the GreenAbility initiative, which receives support from the One Million Youth Action Challenge. It was specifically designed to equip participants with essential knowledge about the escalating impacts of climate change and the critical need for inclusive disaster preparedness strategies that address diverse needs.
Anuoluwapo Ogunrinu, the GreenAbility Project Lead, emphasized the program's goal to empower young persons with disabilities by providing them with the necessary knowledge and tools to respond effectively to climate-related emergencies. She highlighted the importance of creating accessible platforms for learning and leadership development in this context.
"I am proud that this workshop is creating a platform where young persons with disabilities can gain knowledge on how to prepare for climate disasters like floods and heatwaves, while also understanding their role as leaders shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future," Ogunrinu stated.
Addressing Key Challenges and Providing Practical Solutions
Ogunrinu pointed out several challenges faced by persons with disabilities during disasters, including inaccessible communication systems, barriers to safe evacuation, and limited inclusion in disaster planning and response frameworks. To mitigate these issues, each participant received a customised emergency preparedness kit containing essential items such as first aid supplies and other safety tools tailored to their specific needs.
Additionally, the training introduced a peer mentoring approach, enabling participants to disseminate the knowledge gained to others within their communities. This strategy is expected to promote wider awareness and strengthen community resilience in Oyo State, particularly among individuals who were unable to attend the training sessions.
Expert Insights and Policy Recommendations
Kolawole Amusat, a disaster risk reduction expert, provided valuable insights into the nature, patterns, and impacts of climate disasters within the Nigerian context. He stressed that understanding the dynamics of climate-related disasters is critical to improving preparedness and response at the community level, ensuring that all members, including PWDs, are adequately protected.
Kazeem Akinade Olanrewaju of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) underscored the necessity for inclusive policies and strategies that account for the specific needs of persons with disabilities in disaster response and planning. "Inclusive disaster preparedness is not optional; it is a necessity. When we plan for persons with disabilities, we build a system that works for everyone," he asserted, highlighting the broader benefits of such inclusive approaches.
This initiative by EcoSmart Club represents a significant step towards building a more resilient and inclusive society in Oyo State, addressing both immediate disaster risks and long-term climate challenges through education and community engagement.
