The Hope Alive Initiative (HAI) has commended President Bola Tinubu's administration for its dedication to revitalizing Nigeria's education sector through landmark initiatives that are reshaping learning and research across the nation.
In a statement on Sunday by its Director of Press and Communications, Ernest Omoarelojie, the good governance group highlighted key achievements. These include the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and the recent release of N2 billion to each federal university for the construction of 500-bed hostels, totaling over N250 billion. According to HAI, these actions demonstrate a deliberate strategy to empower students, strengthen institutions, and position education as the bedrock of national development.
HAI noted that the operationalization of NELFUND, a visionary scheme providing interest-free loans to Nigerian tertiary students, is one of the administration's most remarkable feats. For decades, financial constraints have hindered access to higher education, leaving countless talented youths unable to pursue their dreams. NELFUND directly addresses this challenge by ensuring no student is denied education due to lack of funds.
The statement emphasized that the scheme goes beyond financing tuition; it democratizes opportunity. By removing financial barriers, NELFUND empowers students from diverse backgrounds to acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies that enable meaningful contributions to the economy. This initiative aligns with President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, which places human capital development at the center of Nigeria's growth trajectory.
HAI also praised the release of N2 billion to each federal university for hostel development, addressing the acute accommodation shortage that has plagued public universities for decades. This intervention is a game-changer for thousands of students who have endured poor and dilapidated hostel infrastructure.
The group called on university authorities to expedite the refund of school fees to students who paid before receiving support under the student loan scheme. HAI urged Nigerians to recognize that the Tinubu administration has set a new benchmark in educational reform and to continue supporting the government to achieve more for the country.
