Ikeja Central Grammar School Receives Solar Power Relief After Two-Year Electricity Struggle

An international energy firm, Schneider Electric, has officially donated and installed a comprehensive solar power system at Ikeja Central Grammar School in Lagos State. This significant contribution comes as part of the company's global Access to Energy initiative, which is specifically designed to expand electricity access to underserved communities and critical public services, including educational and healthcare facilities.

Project Implementation and Official Approval

The solar relief project was executed with the formal approval and oversight of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB). It also received substantial support from various partner organizations. This initiative marks Schneider Electric's very first community impact project for the year 2026, highlighting its ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility within Nigeria.

Leadership Emphasizes Critical Role of Reliable Energy

During the official handover ceremony, Ajibola Akindele, the Country President for Schneider Electric in Anglophone Africa, delivered a powerful address. He emphasized the absolutely critical role that reliable, uninterrupted energy plays in creating and sustaining effective, modern learning environments for both students and teachers across the nation.

"Current estimates suggest that more than half of all public primary and junior secondary schools in Nigeria operate without any reliable power supply," Akindele stated. "This severe limitation drastically restricts student access to essential digital learning tools, limits basic classroom comfort, and makes it extraordinarily difficult for educators to deliver their lessons effectively and efficiently."

He further explained the company's dual focus: "At Schneider Electric, we hold access to energy and access to education as our core priorities. Often, when planning impact projects, the focus tends to be on universities and tertiary institutions, while unintentionally overlooking the younger children who need support the most—those in primary and secondary schools."

Alignment with Global Sustainability Goals

Akindele also highlighted how this initiative directly aligns with key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It specifically supports Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education and Sustainable Development Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. This alignment reinforces Schneider Electric's broader corporate commitment to advancing inclusive and equitable development through practical, sustainable energy solutions.

School Leadership Expresses Profound Gratitude

In her heartfelt remarks, Mrs. Sanni Kudirat, the Head Teacher of Ikeja Central Grammar School, expressed immense gratitude for the transformative project. She described the company's intervention as arriving at a critically urgent time. The school had endured approximately two full years of severely limited and highly unreliable access to the public electricity grid.

This prolonged power crisis made it nearly impossible to power essential school facilities and modern, technology-based learning tools, significantly hindering the educational process and student outcomes.

Technical Specifications of the Solar Installation

The newly installed solar energy solution is both robust and technologically advanced. Its specifications include:

  • A photovoltaic (PV) capacity of 3.3 kilowatt-peak (kWp).
  • A 4-kilowatt (kW) hybrid inverter system.
  • A substantial 10-kilowatt (kW) battery storage system for energy retention.

This integrated system is capable of generating an average of 12 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean, renewable energy daily, which is sufficient to meet the school's core operational needs.

Remote Monitoring for Reliability and Efficiency

To ensure long-term reliability, optimal performance, and energy efficiency, the entire solar solution is equipped with remote monitoring capabilities. It utilizes Schneider Electric's proprietary EcoStruxure Energy Access digital platform.
