Nasarawa University Student Earns PhD at 27, Breaks Record

A young Nigerian lady, Shamsiyyah Umar, has celebrated the successful completion of her doctoral studies at Nasarawa State University, Keffi. She shared her inspiring journey on social media, revealing that she had always dreamed of obtaining a PhD by age 25, but life had other plans. Ultimately, she achieved her goal at 27, breaking a significant family record.

First Lady in Her Generation to Earn a PhD

On her LinkedIn page, Shamsiyyah disclosed that she is the first woman in her generation to earn a PhD. Her post read: "I did this thing and it's called a PhD. Honestly, if you asked me years ago, I would have told you I wanted this at 25 so badly. But life has a way of teaching you that timing matters just as much as the dream itself. And come on… finishing a PhD at 27 is hugeeeee. After years of academic work, research, growth, stress, prayers, deadlines and moments of self doubt, I get to say I did it. Alhamdulillah!"

She continued: "And somewhere in all of this is a little girl from a very large and reputable family who became the first girl in her generation to earn a PhD. That means a lot to me."

A Full Circle Journey

Shamsiyyah explained how her research journey came full circle. Her undergraduate research focused on UNICEF's role in alleviating child poverty in Kaduna State. In 2023, she became a UNICEF Youth Influencer, which inspired her PhD research on UNICEF and the education of children with disabilities in Nigeria. She noted that even her external supervisor remarked that her topic was unique and likely a first of its kind.

In 2025, she became a Youth Advisor with UNICEF Nigeria under the Generation Unlimited Young People's Action Team. Engaging with officials and contributing to policy discussions deeply shaped her research. She recalled a memorable event where she met Celine Lafoucriere, Iliana Albino, Kevin Frey, and Vanessa Lee, which she described as exciting.

Reflecting on her journey, she said: "Life is funny sometimes. The things you once researched from afar somehow become part of your real life and honestly, this journey has reminded me that there is still so much life left to live, so many dreams left to chase. Who knows, maybe I'll still go and get that law degree I have always wanted."

She concluded: "But for now, I just want to say congratulations to myself. And happy 28th birthday to me (oppsss it was last week) I have so much to be grateful for. I am proud of you Dr. Shamsiyyah Umar."

Social Media Reactions

Her achievement triggered an outpouring of congratulations on social media. Olayinka Ogundeji commented: "This is remarkably great Shamsiyyah Umar. PhD Congratulations." Winnie Ishaku also said: "Huge Congratulations."
